Looking for a wireless portable drive (goflex, pocket playlist, etc.)
Time for long car rides with kids, who will demand to be entertained. In the past, I have used Archos tablets becaus they have big fat harddrives. I would fill them up with recorded stuff, and connect the video outputs to the car's dvd player. Archos does not stand by by the products, both tablets failed after about a year and a half (one quit charging, the other has a battery that swelled up like a capri-sun pouch, currently sealed in a bucket in the garage in case it explides, if it hasnt already)
Each kid now has a wireless device, so I am thinking of picking up one of those hard drives that has its own wifi hotspot so that portable deviced can access it. DOes anyone have any experience with things like the Seagate GoFlex, or WDTV Live, HP Pocket Playlist? Requirements: 1. Stream to at least 3 devices at once 2. Bigger the better so I don't have to re-encode files from sage 3. must support many file types (h.264, VOBs, etc. 4. Battery life not important, will be plugged into car

Assuming all of your kid's devices are iOS does that mean you need to transcode all your recordings to Apple friendly MP4s? It would be nice to find an app that can connect to a network server, e.g. Seagate Wireless Plus, and play h.264 and mpeg recordings without transcoding.

that's a good point, but I'm sort of assuming there's something out there for that on the appstore. Maybe tonight's task should be to put a few files on the ipod itself and see what happens

A while back someone posted about the GoFlex and had good things to say about it. I remember because it was the first I'd heard of it and I immediately started thinking about it for a trip I have planned this Fall. I thought the app was able to play all sorts of file types, because the app is the player, not the stock device player. I could be wrong there. What does the Seagate website say (check tech specs on the device)?
If I could remember who posted it or even what the thread was, I'd tell you, but, alas, I cannot. You could try searching the word "goflex" here.

I have the Goflex Satellite 500gb. It is what it claims to be, but there are issues. I've only tried it it with a Samsung 7" Tablet and an Kindle Fire HD. No iOS devices. I've only ever used it for videos. No music. The app(s) I downloaded a couple months back may have been updated since. I haven't used it in a while. Here's what sticks out in my memory.
The stock Android for both devices (Sammy/Kindle) are pretty basic and feel very much like an unfinished betas. For instance, when I stop watching something and return to the video list, it always has to reload/rescan the entire drive again. If you have a lot of videos, it can take a while, and it always defaults back to the top of the list and out of the videos folder. You have to go digging back through your files to get to where you just were. Very irritating. It would be nice if you can disable that scan, but you could not. You'll have to convert all videos to MP4 if you want to stream them (I used Sage to do my conversions). The Android app will let you select a different player than the app itself if you wish, which is a good thing. It does have a web server so you can use your browser to search through the videos. That seemed to be a bit faster than the app for searching for files, though I think it also did the rescan thing. I ran into a problem when I deleted some MP4's off the drive (via USB 3 connection). Even though Explorer shows the files to be gone, they continue to show up in the app and the browser. If I copy them back on again, the app and browser will show two of each file. And ALL of them play still. So I guess the firmware is not using the NTFS partition table to list the drives contents. Anyway, it's been sitting on a shelf for a couple months now till I get back around to tinkering with it. I'll probably have to reformat it and figure out how to reload the stock software. The WiFi worked pretty well. In car should be no problem. I think there's a limit of 3 users at a time. I was playing videos from 50' away without issue. You can password protect access. The battery lasted several hours with just me accessing it. The power connector uses a USB/AC adapter like so many tablets, so you would need a cigarette lighter/USB adapter for long trips. The Wifi shuts down when the drive is connected via USB. Nothing else sticks out in my mind about it. Try Googling reviews for it and see what else you find. It seems to be built more for iOS devices that Android. I think it will fit the bill for your trip. Even if you had the file issues I mention above (which I suspect are just on my drive), you probably won't be deleting anything till the trip is over anyway. And there are already alternative firmwares out there to root the Satellite and add other features, if your so inclined. Hope this helps. Bobby UPDATE: Inspired by the thread I went ahead and re formatted the drive (long format, not quick) and after rebooting it came up clean and now appears to be registering the file deletions (functioning fine). . .

Thanks. Went ahead and bought the Seagate Wireless Plus. Got it all connected, and tried some VOB rips of DVDs, no good, even using alternative players on Android devices. They woirkd fine from a laptriop though, so it;s an android thing. Haven't moved any recordings over, and I basically have about two more nights to sort out whether this is woirth the effort.
if lots of stuff has to be converted, it's going back, and we'll just get a stack of dvds from the library.

If you have to convert anything I suggest Handbreak (if you don't already use it). It is free and much faster than Sage's built-in converter. You can also convert DVDs to mp4s with this tool.

Just dragged a bunch of files over from sage, mostly r5000.dish recordings. I think those are mp4. Most worked fine on my epic 4g touch, some would freeze but still play sound. Seagate app doesnt see a thing, using good player.
Ios is next, but I have about a day to sort this out
