USB UIRT - is this what everyone uses?

Is this the right thing to add to my shopping list for SagTV and multiple tuners / Hauppauge devices / etc?

That's what I use, and I only have 1 device.

In the past I used it to control 3 different satellite receivers from one device. I'm currently using one for a SageTV client. Very reliable little unit.

I have used it with 3 cable boxes for 2 years and no problem, but you need the latest dll file if you're using it to tune your devices and for your remote. If you do get it, it's cheaper buying it from the guy that makes them. http://www.usbuirt.com/ for $58.00 including shiping unless you get the higher frequency model which I think I read you would need for Dish network boxes. 56 Khz model is $5.00 more.

that's good to know - thanks. How does a single remote know how to address three different tuners?

When you setup your 3 different tuners in sage you tell sage which usbuirt zone to use for each tuner. Sage changes the channels for you based on what you set to record. This is where you can get started. http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6282d.

I have used the hauppauge remote, Urc wr7 remote and currently I'm using an x10 icon remote. Once you have the usbuirt installed you just tell sage to use it as your remote receiver and learn each button one at a time. Some buttons ( like the URC wr7 ) you have to learn twice because they flip between 2 codes for each button, but once you've learned each button twice for that remote everything works fine. You can basically use almost any remote with the usbuirt and if there is a button it doesn't recognize, you can use the lrnhelper which is software you can use to program it in so the key is recognized. I'm still using 3 HVR 1800 pci express cards. I got them for $15.00 each new on ebay. They just don't have fm and external composite input. They are ntsc and qam input.

If your cable/sat boxes have firewire, serial or TCP/IP tuning then that is the best way to go.

my cable box presently has firewire tuning if needed, but my satellite boxes are all IR - but each satellite box can be given a seperate, numerical address

If you can change the remote address within the satellite box, you only need to use the single zone of the USB-UIRT.

Do you use your server as a client as well?
