client to server

My server went down and now I am trying to make my client into the server.
The client is an I3 with a ASRock Z68M-ITX/HT MB. I am thinking of using this
Sans Digital [TowerRAID TR4M+BNC ]http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16816111177 for the hard drives. My MB has an e-sata
connection but how can I tell if the chipset suports port mutiplier? My case is so small
I can't put a PM card in it.

If the SD is a no go are they any suggestions on a viable way of adding a lot of storage,
I am thinking [4] drives @ 3TB. Other wise I may go with building a new server complete.

Thanks

You biggest problem would be max bandwidth. How many recording devices do you have and how many clients will be used at one time???

I have [2] HD-PVR'S and [2] HDHR's. I have an [2] HD200's and [1] client computer. Rarely if ever is more than two on at one time. I thought running via e-sata port would be the same as an interal HD.

One drive would, but as you add more drive, they have to all go thru the same cable. You should be OK, as long as you get full speed from the e-sata to port multiplier in the box. ( you could need 7 x ~13Mb/s with that setup)

I don't have a port multiplier card. This was originaly a small client [mini-atx] and there is no room in the case for a card.

My question is does the intel chipset support PM tru the e-sata port.

Do you have an older computer around capable of booting from usb, If so download a free copy of unraid and see if that will work for you. You could also try freenas. Both of these solution are networked attached should meet your recording requirments.

You could use the working component from your dead sagetv server and buynsomething like this http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?inv...at=MBB&cpc=APM. Add hard drives and you have a NAS.

Just a suggestion. See attached Write and Read specs on my unraid server. I don't use it to record to, but a do use it for playback of bluerays and dvds.

I've searched as much as I can, and I'd say it doesn't. You might try sending an email to the MB maker.

The case you are looking at does. You will be using a single SATA II port to talk to the chip in the case, then it will talk to the drive/drives. That SHOULD be fast enough. That's 300MBs, or 30x 10MB/s minus any overhead.

Thanks for allthe advice. I seem to have some issuse getting Sage to run smoothly. Instead of fooling around with theclient I think I want to build a new server. I will start a new thread soon asking for advice. Again thanks for all the input.
