Client trouble, API error
This was a holiday week, so I went to the beach. Got back today and dived back into Sage . Earlier today, I finally got the server completed. Man it was hard finding wallpapers that include a TV or relates to TV that is not from an actual TV show.
A few hours ago I started working on setting up one of my clients. Win7 x86 SFF PC but I dropped an ATI 5770 in it and Java 1.7U9. I installed the client and ran though the wizard/settings then loaded Gemstone as my first plugin. There was an option for "client install" and no other install options, so I choose that. After saying yes to reloading, Sage client came up but there was no Gemstone menu item. Went into the plugins and Gemstone is disabled and Gemstone API says "failed". Ok, so what I have tried so far: 1) Uninstall plugin, reinstall. 2) Uninstall plugin, delete contents of the plugin install folder, reinstall plugin. 3) Uninstall Sage client, wipe the directory, reinstall. Copy the properties back and try again. 4) Uninstall Sage client, reinstall, do not copy properties, do not configure at all just connect it to server. Install Gemstone again. Ok so none of that worked. All produce the same problem. I crack open the manual and look for logging, find the settings and turn it on. It restarts my sage server (is there a way to just turn logging on for the client, not the server?). This seems to be the relaveant entry: Quote:

Perhaps the sagex plugin did not install properly as it is a dependency for gemstone.. Not sure what the error is really stating.
I believe you will find a mix of opinions re java versions but I go with the one sage installs as I do not use other java apps that need anything newer. But others have reported just a failed java install causing issues so a remove and install of java may help. Also check if any of the library plugins is showing as failed. k |

This looks like the sagex plugin did not get installed installed correctly. My suggestion would be to restart, then uninstall Gemstone, and then re-install gemstone.

Thanks guys! It looks like uninstalling Gemstone left the Sagex plugin. I will try removing it and redoing Java. Will post back if that helped or not.

Tangentially related, what's the latest version of Java that should be installed on a Sage client for best results (stability/performance)? I currently have JRE6u19 on my new client test system.

I have used all V6 and V7 Java packages on my test clients and never had an issue but on the server I stick with the latest V6 R35(?). Seems to vary by user though. I have a mix of Windows 7 x64 HP/Ultimate and Windows 8 Pro x64 clients. Whatever works for you and is stable.

I've been fighting with this all day on and off. I've finally got it working. Besides Gemstone, late last night I was starting to see Phoenix core failing on some re-installs of Sage client.
Tried a few different Java versions and more re-installs of client than I care to count. Today I gave up and I started the process of formatting and reinstalling Windows. Not only Sage but I was also having issues with the Steam 10 foot beta and my codecs were a mess from optimizing and tweaking. Not to crazy a deal, since I have a good image of Win7 core all setup. So I went though and got a perfect install. Installed Sage client a couple hours ago and had the same problem. Really considered pulling my hair out. Then I did something that shouldn't have helped. I changed install directory. I had been installing Sage client into c:\program files\HTPC\Sage client. Instead I let it default install and everything worked fine. No clue why, I have Sage installed on my server to c:\program files (x86)\HTPC\Sage and it works fine. Anyway, hope this helps someone in the future. |
