any changes to 64 bit W7 O.S. and 1394 Firewire set top box drivers?

has this changed at all lately, or do you still have to be running 32 bit Windows OS to use the Firewire/1394 set-top box control drivers?

Although I've not investigated, I'm putting money on "no change, you can't do it in 64bit".

I believe the driver developer(s) leveraged some drivers that have no 64 bit equivalent and those folks might not be doing this work anymore, for some time.

-a party wishing I could do it.

The Windows firewire driver is basically from a Panasonic tape drive (or such) from like 20 years ago... No one has ever been able to get the source code, which has likely been lost since. There were some attempts to create one from scratch, but they never really went anywhere...

I was rocking that solution for awhile and finally got rid of the cable box when my c drive failed on my home server.

I moved to WHS 2011, and ditched the colossus/cablebox for HD-HomeRun prime (cablecard). Been loving it ever since.

I switched from Firewire to a USB UIRT about 4 months ago in order to be able to upgrade to x64 to take advantage of additional memory. I'm only using the USB UIRT with 1 STB so I can't comment on a multiple STB setup but changing my Sage setup to use the USB UIRT was relatively simple and straight forward and I haven't had any problems with changing channels with the new setup.

If I knew how well the USB UIRT system was going to work, I would have done this earlier but I was afraid to change a working Firewire system and held out until increasing memory requirements forced me to change.

Thumbs up

I also went to IR from Firewire after upgrading to 64bit. Channel changing seems to be just as fast as firewire. I'm blasting via HDPVR to my SA4250HD.

how many tuning devices are you using...more than one? if so, are they both using USB UIRT, or a combo of devices? I have one HD-PVR, and one Colossus card. Therefore, having one controlled by FireWire and one by IR makes things simple. I would like to have that extra ram though, in a 64 bit system.

I have 2 tuning devices, a STB/HD-PVR combo and a HDHR Prime. I use the STB/HD-PVR for stations that are marked copy-once and the HDHR Prime for copy-freely stations. This allows me to view any recording from anywhere in my house using extenders.

The STB is tuned through the USB UIRT and the HDHR Prime is tuned using SageDCT. I know the USB UIRT can separately tune 2 devices and I actually purchased the splitter and cables from Radio Shack to do this but I purchased the HDHR Prime and eliminated the need for a second STB/HD-PVR from my SageTV setup before I got around to configuring the USB UIRT to tune 2 devices. However, I do know there are people on the forum who are using the USB UIRT to tune more than 1 device because I checked this out before deciding to upgrade my windows installation to x64 and replace firewire tuning with a USB UIRT.

sounds good...so from what I think I understand, you would get rid of Hauppauges' IR devices altogether, and control them both with USB UIRT?

You can control up to 3 Devices and act as an Ir Receiver.

Correct. I used Hauppauges' IR before switching to firewire and, while it was generally accurate, it did occasionally miss a channel change or change to the wrong channel. The USB UIRT has performed flawlessly and, if I needed to control 2 IR devices, I'd definitely connect the Radio Shack splitter (part number 274-375; 1/8" stereo male to dual 1/8" mono female) to the USB UIRT and then separate IR cables to the splitter. You then need to duplicate and edit the IR text file that Sage creates to append Z1 (for Zone 1) to the front of all the IR commands in the first file and and Z2 (for Zone 2) to the front of all the IR commands in the second file so that the USB UIRT can independently control the 2 devices.
