Can't control volume when watching live TV but can if it is recorded.

I can use the SageTV remote to control the volume through my amplifier speakers when watching a recorded show, but for some reason I can not change the volume when I am watching a live TV program. My setup is as follows:

HDMI from HD300 to the TV.
Optical cable from HD300 to the Amplifier.
Standard SageTV remote control.
Volume off to the TV speakers.

I used to have the HDMI cable going to the preamp first and then to the TV, but in that setup, I had to have my power sucking amplifier running to watch SageTV. I like my new setup because I can just flick on the TV and Sage and use only one remote.

I find it odd that the HD300 behaves differently when I am watching TV.

I know I can solve the problem by getting a universal remote but I haven't broken down a bought one yet. Is this normal, or is there a setting I can change?

Ideally, you should be controlling the volume on the amplifier. You should be able to teach the HD300 to control any device (the TV Vol+,- buttons). The HD300 cannot control the volume if it is bitstreaming AC3 or DTS.
