WHS Drive Upgrade - HELP!

Tried to upgrade one of my drives dedicated to Sage Recording on a WHS V1 server. After getting the bigger drive installed, I was getting an error from WHS about the Virtual Disk Service being turned off to prevent Data execution. Maybe, someone can tell me where I went wrong?

I have 3 drives dedicated to Sage Recordings, one is 1.5 TB and two are 750 GB. They are *not* in the WHS pool, so I thought this was going to be easy-peasy. The objective was to upgrade one of the 750s to a 1.5. Here's what the server looked like before I started:
  • C: (SYS) 20GB
  • D: (Data) 445GB
  • E: (Data) 465 GB
  • F: (SageF) 1.36TB
  • G: (SageG) 698GB
  • H: (SageH) 698GB (Drive I hope to upgrade)

Here's what I tried.
  1. Remove drive G from server
  2. Install the new-to-WHS (re-formatted) 1.5GB drive
  3. Boot up server (new drive is recognized as E:! Ugh. Oh well)
  4. Stop Sage Service
  5. Copy Sage recordings from H drive to new E: drive
  6. Shutdown server
  7. Re-install G drive
  8. Install new drive, replacing old H drive

So, when I boot up again, I get the error about Data Execution Prevention. And my drives now look like this:
  • C: (SYS) 20GB
  • D: (Data) 445GB
  • E: (HP) 1.3TB <-- My "new" drive
  • F: (SageF) 1.36TB
  • G: (SageG) 698GB
  • H: (Data) 465 GB

Any idea where I went wrong? Do settings for non-pool drives have to be somehow preserved, so that WHS will take the new drive as a direct replacement for the old drive, and use the same drive letter?

Is this a pre-built WHS computer (perhaps by HP)? Three things stick out to me:

1. You have two "data" drives. I built my own WHS box and have but one "data" drive.
2. Your new drive is labeled as "HP".
3. You said you removed "G", but that drive actually seems to have stayed the same, while E and H got swapped.

If you put the drives back the way they were, does everything go back to normal?

I agree I have the current layout in my WHSv1 box in DiskManager:
  • Disk0 - Sys(C) 20GB and Data(D) 259.45GB WD 300GB Raptor
  • Disk1 - BluRay1(M) 3TB not in array because WHSv1 didn't appear to support 3TB drives in pool even with the XP driver I downloaded. This is being obsoleted as I write this as soon as all the data is in the array it will be removed from box.
  • Disk2 - Install(K) 298GB not in array put install programs on this drive use to be OS drive before installing Raptor
  • Disk3 - Data 1TB in array no drive designation
  • Disk4 - Data 750GB in array no drive designation
  • Disk5 - Data 1TB in array no drive designation
  • Disk6 - Data 1TB in array no drive designation
  • Disk7 - Data 750GB in array no drive designation
  • Disk8 - Data 1TB in array no drive designation
  • Disk9 - Data 1TB in array no drive designation
  • Disk10 - RecordingDrive1(E) 1TB not in array
  • Disk11 - RecordingDrive4(H) 1TB not in array
  • Disk12 - RecordingDrive5(I) 1TB not in array
  • Disk13 - RecordingDrive2(F) 1TB not in array
  • Disk14 - RecordingDrive3(G) 1TB not in array
  • Disk15 - (B) USB backup drive 2TB for non video directories in the drive pool

This is a self-built WHS box also. The HP drive was just labeled that because I was trying to swap with a 1.5TB drive that was in an HP PC. As for things "going back" to normal after putting back the old drive, I would say almost. I put the old drive back last night before the nightly backups started. WHS no longer throws an error, and seemed happy with doing backups. Once I re-created the share on the old drive, Sage seems to be able to access it. But the old drive, which used to be H:, is now E:. And the DATA drive that (I think) used to be E: is now H:.

I wish I had a snapshot of DiskManager from before I started. I know that the Sage non-pool drives were F:, G: and H:. And that I had 3 other drives that were in the pool (1 internal and 2 external USB drives). So, rewritten the way BobPhoenix had his, I believe I started with something like:

Disk0 - Sys(C) 20GB and Data(D) 445.75 GB 500GB Internal Drive
Disk? - 500GB USB External in pool
Disk? - 400GB USB External in pool
Disk? - SageF(F) 1397.26 GB 1.5TB Internal (not in pool)
Disk? - SageG(G) 698 GB 750GB Internal (not in pool)
Disk? - SageH(H) 698 GB 750GB Internal (not in pool)

I *thought* I previously had an E: drive, but maybe that's not true. I can say that now, with the old drive back in, Drive Manager looks like this:

Disk0 - Sys(C) 20GB and Data(D) 445.75 GB 500GB Internal Drive
Disk1 - SageF(F) 1397.26 GB 1.5TB Internal (not in pool)
Disk2 - SageG(G) 698 GB 750GB Internal (not in pool)
Disk3 - SageH(E) 698 GB 750GB Internal (not in pool)
Disk4 - DATA(H) 465.75GB (500GB USB External in pool)
Disk5 - DATA (no drive designation) 372.60 GB (400GB USB External in pool)

So, since I don't know how to get back to where I was before, and everything seems to be working OK, maybe the question I should ask is: What steps should I follow to replace the non-pool SageH(E) drive with a 1.5TB drive?

Try this:

1. Remove the drive letter assignment for SageH(E) via Disk Management.
2. Restart and check for any errors.
3. Shut down.
4. Add 1.5TB drive.
5. Power up and check for any errors.
6. Assign drive letter to 1.5TB.
7. Assign drive letter (anything but E) to old SageH.
8. Restart and check for errors.
9. Copy data from old to new drive.
10. If desired, remove drive letter from old SageH and remove drive from system.

With the additional checks and the slow steps, hopefully you'll be able to either avoid the issue entirely or see what step is actually causing the issue.

OK, thanks, I'll give that a try. I'll have to pick up a SATA dock, as I have no more bays inside the case.
