Turn off server thrugh SageTv

I am using SageTv 7 and a HD300 extender off my media server - I love it. Have you guys come across a plugin or setting which will allow me to turn my server off through the sageTv UI when going to bed at night? Currently, the server will shut down 1 hr after latest activity and I'd like to save that 1 hr when going to bed at night...It is a minor detail but carbon footprint matters everywhere...

If you aren't actually interacting with the sage server, than it won't be reseting the idle timer. Sage just prevents windows from going to sleep while in use. If, for instance, your windows sleep timeout is set to 60 minutes, and you haven't touched the server's keyboard or mouse for 60 minutes, it will be trying to sleep. If you are watching sage via an extender, or sage is recording something, it will be kept awake, but as soon as sage says it's okay, windows will sleep. There are settings in sage to configure how long it keeps windows awake after use: Setup -> Detailed Setup -> Customize -> Power Management settings. The default, I believe, is 20 minutes.

Thanks for response. The mentioned setting is set for 60 minutes and then the server shuts down. During the day I don't want the setting to be lower because I have small kids who constantly turn the TV on and off. But at night it would be nice if I could turn off the server immediately from the Sage extender because it will not be needed over the night. As it is now, it turns off after 60 minutes but if I could turn it of immediately it would save 365 hr runtime pr year.

What I would be looking for is a plugin where I under Set-up Menu could 'Shutdown server'...pretty much like skiingwiz has made a plugin "Restart Sage from Setup Menu"

I can of cause just remote desktop onto the server and shut it down manually...but it is a pain and WAF is low.

If you have an Android or iOS phone/tablet, by using T*SageTV or T*SageTVRemote, you could probably setup one of the custom button (configured in the SageTCPServer plugin) to execute a shutdown command of the server...

But if the "wasted" energy from your server is going to heat then it isn't totally wasted if your furnace is running anyway.

You should be able to use ADM to launch a batch file that runs a shutdown command on the server to put it to sleep. But I'm not sure if that will work if sage is still holding it out.

People get a bit obsessive about energy usage sometimes. Never mind the fact that the server will be idle during this extra hour, and will probably be pulling around 50W, resulting in about $0.20-0.40/month.

Thanks for your input. After studying the SageTCPserver configuration it seems the custom buttons will allow me to lauch Sage commands. I don't see, however, that any of the sage available commands will be able to control the server?

Hmm, yes. I am not familiar with ADM plugin but will read up on its wiki. I guess I could copy the menu item for 'Restart SageTV', call it 'Shutdown server' and then somehow link a bat file to the menu item which will launch a shutdown command on the server...I shall be back.

I probably haven't updated the wiki for it, but in the thread I do mention examples like:

HD100 On,EXE:C:/sageextctrl.exe 192.168.0.105 on
HD100 Off,EXE:C:\\sageextctrl.exe 192.168.0.105 off

Which takes the form:

Button_Label, EXE:Command

You might need to find some Shutdown.exe or such to use.

I have now installed the ADM plugin from josjoken and configured a new menu item called 'Shutdown server' and linked it to a bat file containing a server shutdown command. It works

...if it wasn't for the fact that I also use the MyMovies plugin which doesn't seem to be compatible with ADM - so I had to uninstall ADM again. Back to square one

This makes me wonder if I could setup a .bat file to resolve the following. If possible, I have no idea how (aside from restart):

Situation:
My HD PVR stopped recording/error. Sage UI still works fine (windows 7)

What I do now:
-VPN into server, shutdown
-walk to basement
-unplug hd pvr. plug back in
-press power on server.

Would like:
-on extender (HD100,200), navigate to ADM command
-batch file would:
--send some sort of power cycle command to HD PVR
--(if even needed anymore) send restart command to server

Is this something I should pursue and look into, or is it unlikely to work?

People have written code to do stuff like that but you need special hardware. Something like this would be useful http://www.ambery.com/reposw.html

There are probably cheaper devices if you just need one outlet.

There might be another way to do this. If you have an AC outlet on your cable/sat STB and the outlet turns on/off with the box then you might be able to toggle the power on your HD-PVR with that via IR.

My thread got highjacked...

When ADM is installed, it replaces the 'MyMovies' menu item with the standard Sage 'Video' item...Question is if the plugins ADM and MyMovies and be brought to peacefully co-exist.

Alright all,

'Search' is your friend...it seems that my issue is described in an ADM related thread http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...ies#post513844. It is a matter of copying eventual plugin provided menu items into ADM as part of set-up. I will give it a short - it will probably solve my problem.

This worked out indeed. In ADM one can copy/paste plugin menues into the standard SageTV menu by following the simple steps in wiki. It works well with the menu item 'Shut down server' I have created under Exit. I am a happy camper
