editing sage recorded files...

have there been any developments in this area lately? I have a back-log of two hour shows where I'd like to save four minutes.
are folks converting to other formats and then editing with things like Premiere, Vegas, etc, or is there a good app for trimming long shows while staying in the native formats that Sage records (.ts etc)

If you want to edit HDPVR recordings you will need to use the beta that supports H.264

Yes. I have a plugin for SageTV V6 that uses VideoReDo to edit MPEG files. I was attempting to upgrade it to V7 but never completed it. If VideoReDo had updated their COM interface to include the DVD burning interface I would have been more motivated to finish it. But they didn't and I ran out of time to work on any plugin at all.

+1 for VideoReDo TVSuite V4

I record blocks of Palladia hd videos overnite and extract out the individual music videos. Recorded a few concerts too and cut out the commercials.

It has a nice feature that you can shift the audio +/- if things are out of sync, and it will maintain the video and audio streams without re-encoding.

Plus with the beta versions you can do multiple audio streams the current released version doesn't (if I am remembering correctly anyway).

lol...I love Palladia. Exactly where I'm coming from. after you've trimmed out excess, do the files get saved as .ts?

for example, let's say you wanted to edit out a chunk, but leave the edited file on the drive in the same place so that Sage will still find it under recordings. Do you edit it as a different name and then resave it as the original name?
Also, if you split up the main recording into many files, then how does Sage find the new files, under "Video" selections?

I edit them and put them into import directories with the same name as the original. I have the auto scan of import directories turned off. Then I stop SageTV service and delete or at least move to a path that Sage doesn't know about and then restart service mode. This will cause an import directory scan and sage will see the path is different and rescan the file and update the length. Similar to how you can move your recordings with SJQ. In fact you could edit the file with VideoReDo and just setup a vprj file with the appropriate edits and call VideoReDo from a SJQ script to do the edit and reimport.

the import directory has the same name, or the files do?

delete what? the old files or the old dir/path?

this sounds like a good tip, once I figure it out - doh.

Just a heads up, if you leave the filename unchanged but edit out the commercials, you will have some slight timeline issues in SageTV.

For music videos, I name the files something appropriate, put them in an import directory, and then edit the metadata from within SageTV.

The files have the same name. Import directories should NEVER be the same path as your recording directories.

Once you have the edited recordings in an import path you delete the original files and trigger an import scan.

Here is what I do because I haven't learned SJQ yet.
  1. Turn off automatic import scans in detailed settings
  2. Edit the recording in VideoReDo
  3. Write the output file from VideoReDo with the same name as the input file to an import directory
  4. Change the time and date of the edited file to match the original recording (look for an app called Touch on the forums to do this)
  5. Shut down SageTV
  6. Delete the original recording
  7. Restart SageTV to start an import scan when it starts up
  8. Wait until scan is finished
  9. Watch edited shows. You will see RED in the time line to indicate the edited portion but it will be all together at the beginning of the recording
