That was too good of deal to pass up -- I'm sure I can make it work somewhere, somehow

Hauppauge doesn't seem to have much info on the device. I can't find it in the Products portion of their web site.

These appear to be made by Pinnacle which was purchased by Hauppauge.

Quote:
In January 2009, Hauppauge (see Hauppauge USB TV tuner review) bought the Pinnacle line of TV tuners for personal computers from Avid. Hauppauge now markets the former Pinnacle line of tuners under the name PCTV which is separate from its Hauppauge line.
It is not clear what software packages support this device.

Windows Media Center for one per one user review

Quote:
Dispite what others may say it does work under Windows7 32 & 64 bit OS. I will stress don't use the CD that came with the unit, download them from the website and only install the driver not the cheap software.
It works great with Windows Media Center and I have not had one problem. It also goes be other names, such as PCTV 80e mini stick. It does get warm, but it has not stoped working or performing for me.

OTA works flawlessly in SageTV. Great picture using the packaged antenna... get all broadcast HD channels and many more ...Cable Clear QAM is a different story works great in the Pinnacle TV but Sage does not find any channels.

Just got home to play with mine. Going to goof around with it in WMC 7 but it will probably ultimately live with SageTV -- thanks for posting an update!

Well phooey, two of my WMC7 installations are hosed (one from playing around with too many add-ons I think, the other due to upgrading the TouchSmart software which has really messed up video playback in all sorts of ways anyhow -- I see a system restore in my future, bah humbug).

I moved it to SageTV, got it to scan but got some very whacky results with both the little antenna it shipped with and with the indoor rabbit ears. SageTV would say it "found" 24 channels, would only enable about six of them by default, and none of them worked in preview mode. The signal strength would oscillate from 0 to 100% every few seconds and video never showed up.

When trying Live TV from the Guide for any of the enabled channels, it would report "no signal".

I know the little bugger works because it tuned 18 channels on another computer in the other room with just the little antenna using the PCTV software (and 14 in the living room with the rabbit ears where SageTV is installed). Was a stunning picture too. But, I also live a good distance from the broadcast towers too so I knew I wasn't going to get everything but with SageTV I can't seem to get anything...

Harrumph.

Any tricks or tips regarding getting SageTV to do a better job of picking up the same channels the PCTV software does?

Works fine in windows 7 no problems. Got all the HD QAM Channels shows how limited SageTV 7 is as far as tuner support... that it will not even scan the QAM channels. Time to start looking at other options. With smaller form factor PC's coming out USB supported tuners will be used more and more and Sage is no longer developing so it will be left behind.

I don't know, I could NEVER use a SFF PC for my sage server, simply because it wouldn't hold the drives. I have a mini-itx client, but don't have any tuners attached to it.

One tip I have for you which helped me get even better reception was that I used a longer USB extender than the one supplied. It appears that my PC was causing the tuner to sometimes break up. I was able to use an 8 footer I had around. I thought that would be too long but it wasn't. It also allowed me to better position the prepacked antennae.

each segment of USB (read from HUB to HUB/Device) is rated for 15m. And you can then daisy chain it up to 6 hops long. USB CAN stretch pretty far in this way, and there are 'active' extension cables (which are basically a one-port hub on the end of a 15m cable).

Reception is only a problem when using the tuner with SageTV (it won't tune channels/signals it finds after scanning). The PCTV software (TVCenter) works fine for the channels it finds.

Download the drivers from here the 80e. Remove your source before you Install the drivers. Restart your server add the source and do a broadcast antenna scan.

I've done all that, thanks.

I installed those drivers directly, SageTV finds the tuner fine, I can have SageTV scan for channels fine, it reports some number of channels found, and some number less than that are enabled by default and none of those will tune will through SageTV. When I try to tune through preview during the channel config, the signal strength oscillates from 0 or 10% to 100% every second or so. When I try to tune an enabled channel from the guide, I get "no signal".

Meanwhile, without moving the antennas (I've tried both the one it ships with and indoor rabbit ear ones) and starting up TVCenter, it scans and finds more channels than SageTV and tunes all the ones it finds.

*shrug* no big deal -- I'll be using it with MCE down the road at some point
