Angry Endless XP updates

newegg had a sale on hd homeruns, so I picked up one to replace an ati that always has driver issues...

What a nightmare- I don't generally update servers if they aren't broken, so I've been doing windows updates for the last couple hours... so I can install .net4... so I can install the hdhomerun software!

Just be glad it is not a full re-install. Time to move to Win7.

Release 20110323 went with .Net 4 latest framework. 2 updates ago.

Well, it took 4 hours and a couple reboots, I'm not running sage on XP-SP3 and have .net4 installed.

Then, just to make it extra fun, I went to install the hdhomerun software, and the version from 7/29 wouldn't install on XP It would get almost all the way through the install, and then pop up an error that it couldn't find the hdhomerun_setup file. It just wasn't being extracted properly. So, I opened a ticket with SiliconDust and tried a couple more times to get it installed.

It worked perfectly when I tried it in Win7, but those files were 64bit and didn't work on xp when I tried just copying them.

A while later I found the release notes for the hdhomrun software... it wasn't linked on their site, but I was able to paste the last windows version's build date into the download link and get the previous release. That one installed perfectly. It took me 6 hours from the time I started, but now everything is running great, and I can disable the flaky ATI tuner in Sage. I really like that it includes an app to show signal quality.

A day after finally getting everything working, I got an email from silicondust's support, that they had put out a new release of their install, fixing the problem. I haven't tried updating the software yet since everything is now working, so I have no idea if the new version of the installer works.

I already migrated from Vista to XP. I do have an extra Win7 box running that would be perfect, but I'd have to pull the proc from my current server since it's faster. I may do that migration this fall.

That's the release I finally found to download, and it worked perfectly.

The 8/01 update installed fine on my XP SP3 SageTV server.

Apparently there was an installer issue with the 7/29 update.

That's why I have a custom XP installation disk, where I used nLite to merge the current drivers and updates (from say RyanVM site)... Sure it took a long time to piece everything together, but now when I reinstall, XP installs itself automatically with new patches/driver in under 30 minutes.

Yep, that's the ticket I opened up on Monday night. I was very impressed with how fast they got back to me about the fix.

The installer would get to the "setup" but it hadn't unpacked the hdhomerun_setup.exe file.
