Low profile cases.

I'm looking at a case for my wife's new computer I'm going to build from some spare parts I've got laying around. I'm trying to find out if a low profile case is a good idea or not. One of my friends is saying that he's only ever bought one and he regrets it. His is his htpc with quite a few hard drives and such, but the one I'm building will be used for wife stuff. Whatever that is. I'm talking about a low powered video card I currently have (ati 3450 that is low pro ready), a cpu I have and a microatx board I will purchase along with a hard drive.

So what are your thoughts on low profile cases?

Is there a compelling reason to go with the low profile case? my experience with them has been that they are a compromise. Some cards don't fit. if you are putting something beefy in there they tend to be louder due to the smaller fans. I've used several low-profile cases, my results have never been *bad*, just more limiting. And at the moment I am looking (among other options) at getting a mini-itx system in tiny case. My server is a 2u so it only takes low profile cards... which meant I couldn't put my MCE-500 in there, Everything else I currently have takes full height cards (shuttle systems, antec 900 cases, Silverstone Sugo cases)

Agreed-limiting. I have a low profile Silversatone case. Where you stick an adapter into the PCI slot which basically turns the PCI card sideways. WHich was fine until I thought I might upgrade the board. But to use a PCI-E card I would need to get a different adapter. Mine also had the smaller fans so it was noisier. Also needed a slimline dvd (notebook-type) and only had room for single hard drive. With everything crammed in it also tended to run hotter.

Agree.. I have an older Cooler Master 260. Picked up the AGP and PCI riser cards for it, of course now would need a PCI-Ex. Worked with regular DVDRW and 3.5" HD, but to do anything inside requires creativity and a lot of disassembly. Otherwise, it looks good
