Directv DVR Question

Does anyone have a Directv DVR? I am looking at re-signing up with DTV and it is cheaper by about $150 to get a DVR and 3 HD receivers than to get 4 HD receivers. And I can't use the Standard def receivers because there isn't a capability to change the channels thru the network.

So What I want to know, Can I get away with using the DTV HD DVR like I would any other receiver?

yes you can, but they will likely try to lock you into paying the DVR fee if you actually have the DVR.

I think you would like the whole home DVR. It operated like the TV portion of Sage without commercial skipping.

In 4 days I get to find out. Although I got the dvr box because it was free. And you have to have it for on demand movies for some reason.

Please, Let us know when you find out.

Im sure the whole home dvr is nice, But you still need an HD box at each tv to use it and come on, We all know it doesn't hold a candle to sage, lol. I would like it to be able to get the cinema stuff they have though.

So did you get the whole home directv dvr? If so, what do you think? How many tuners is it?

I am thinking of moving to directv from optimum because my epg info is not correct and it isn't getting any better. i am trying to decide if I can do without the hddvr or should I just switch to it. Although I am at a crossroads because I stream all my blurays from my unraid server and I like being able to watch tv, record tv and stream movies all from my little hd200/300.

So if I sign up with directv they offer that hddvr with other hd receivers but I do not want to pay the monthly dvr fee but I am not sure what all services are tied into the hddvr (other than dvr).

I got a fantastic deal. I have their highest package with nfl sunday ticket included for free. I got the whole home dvr (which will never be used) and the new mini box is pretty cool. I got the HTTP tuning to work with the directv internet gateway device that provides an ip to every box without the need for an ethernet cord at each box. I'm paying under $100 for a year and when that is over I will have to see how much I really want all of those channels. Setting up my colossus was easy. It works very well. No issues to speak of yet. Directv equipment is much better than the other offerings I've seen (imho). Installer was very nice and did everything I asked (and verified I was "sure" many times when asked to put two boxes into a closet).

I say go for it.

So how are you getting the whole home dvr without the fees? Did you hook up the dtv box via component or hdmi to the colossus? I wouldn't mind the dvr plus hd receivers my kids are older and want tv. I only have one extra sage client license, so I am stuck deciding what to do. No reason to get rid of my current sage server but getting the kids tv is a little different. I would've just bought 2 more extenders if sage didn't sell out to google.

I got the hd fee waived, but the $7 whole home fee is not avoidable. I'm using hdmi with dolby digital enabled and native resolution turned on. Only issues I have are with SD shows.

Did you buy online or locally? have you used the dvr function of the receiver?

No it is the hr24. I was assured it was the whole home system. I don't think the HR34 comes out for a while. I guess I just have multi room viewing. Not sure what I'd be gaining from the hr34 since I'm not using the dvr.

No, and I won't be using it at all. I've sold DirecTV in the past and their dvr is ok at best. If you are trying to substitute sage you will miss some things. I've always had good luck with dtv's equipment.

I signed up on-line. Got a very good deal. it seems the deal I got is still available. The waive the HD fee so paying the dvr and whole home fee ends up the same. Either $10 for hd and no dvr or $10 for hd and dvr/multi room viewing.
