So this is pretty cool. It explains why they have been so quiet. Now all we need is HD and we'll be good to go.

Here's an interesting little caveat (from the user's guide):

Quote:
Note: You will be able to play your recorded videos only on the PC that recorded them. Please make sure you record the videos on the PC you plan to use to watch your videos.
And I'm guessing you'll only be able to play them from the PlayLater program (and maybe from PlayOn someday?)

Looks like they are wrapping the recordings in a DRM'd container format...

My initial excitement was quickly dashed when I discovered that the files saved by PlayLater will not play in SageTV.

I was also disappointed when I could not find any way to "subscribe" to a show, so that PlayLater would detect and download when a new episode becomes available.

I will just continue to use the Playon Plugin, and see if PlayLater evolves into something more useful in the future.

I was also underwhelmed. It's a good start but without the ability to subscribe to shows it's nothing more than a glorified one-shot downloader.

Playlater Release Announcement

It appears that is still suffers the same restrictions discussed earlier.

I have been using the beta for a while. At some point in time a "PlayLater recordings" folder showed up when using the PlayOn plugin, so it is now possible to watch recorded shows through SageTV.

The main advantage I can see, for me, is that occasionally streaming shows through PlayOn has problems where the stream stops working, and the only remedy is to restart and watch the show again from the beginning.

With PlayLater, I can record the show, and if it fails I can just try recording again. When the show is successfully recorded, then I know I will have no glitches watching the show through SageTV.

But I don't think this small amount of convenience is worth paying a large fee for.

PlayOn PlayLater PlayMark

I've been using PlayLater with PlayOn and tested PlayMark recently.

This is something that some of you may want to try out.

What I do is queue up several shows (netflix, Hulu, other web video) to be recorded with the PlayOn Android App (nexus 7 tablet). The shows/movies are recorded to the Playon Folder on my sage sever in the basement and I use the RoboBasket to move files to various folders that are monitored by Sage server. The shows appear with all the metadata, etc (netflix recordings) and I just sit back and watch on my Sage HTPC Client.

Just like having a "tuner" + DVR for streaming content!
I've cut cable 3 months ago and installed an antenna in the attic.
With PlayLater + Antenna + ripped DVDs... I have lots to keep Sage busy.

Works well!

Thanks for the tip. I use playon, but I hadn't heard of playmark. Sounds like your setup lets you just select vids from hulu/netflix and have them 'magically' appear on your sage system a few hours later. Sweet!

I guess this sorta answers my question here...

Thanks, I'll check this out (although the Sage Podcast Recorder plugin works pretty well for our purposes most of the time).

I am a little late to the game on this, but I am going to order both PlayOn and PlayLater lifetime as a bundle today. I had used PlayOn off and on over the years.

I thought you had to wait until a PlayOn recording had finished before you could record it? How do you use the podcast recorder to save PlayOn recordings. I use the podcast recorder to record podcasts and it works great for that for me.

Thanks!
