Benefit of running sagetv as a service?
Would someone please help me understand why I should run sagetv service instead of just the executable at startup?

1.The service will restart in the event of a failure.
2. You do not have to be logged into the desktop. 3. If you are watching Sagetv on the server and only have the UI running if it crashes all recordings will stop. There are more reasons I am sure some others will chime in.

2a. You can log out of Windows and log back in as a different user without disturbing recordings in progress.

My sagetv host is a dedicated server, so multiple users isn't going to be a factor. I did try to run it as a service and then launch the sage UI. I found that the video playback was VERY choppy. I see the benefits of starting again so you don't miss recordings.
Does anyone know why my video playback would be so poor when I run sage as a service? I also noticed that my skin was setback to default.

You do need to reconfigure everything, as for some reason they consider it a different instance and don't reuse the non-service configuration...

The fact that you're running a UI on that machine makes it sound like it's not just a dedicated server but also a playback client as well. This is another reason to run the recording engine as a service, so it's isolated from misbehaving UI mods and/or clumsy users at the keyboard.
