HD300 Usb Wireless access

Just got my HD300 and I'm having problems getting the wireless access to work. The 'Wireless' option does not appear on the Network page. The unit came with firmware version 20101008-8. I am using a Linksys usb wireless G adapter. I've done all the preliminary setup on the server (Win7 x64) and have forwarded ports thru my cable gateway.

Please do not tell me that I need a SageTV approved adapter...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ok I wont tell you that (manly because I don't know the authoritative answer), but where did you get the idea, just any wifi card would work?

Myself I saw that SageTV sold a single wifi card for an ok price $30 (compared to the Tivo wifi adapter ~$70) and thought lets be safe.

Well, I won't tell you that, then....but Sage does provide info on the one approved adaptor for working with the USB port. Don't have to buy from them but it does have to be based on a very specific chipset to be promised to work.

I use a wireless-to-wired adaptor plugged into the network interface port (essentially one half of a bridge, intended for use with things like TVs that only have wired network ports). Won't claim I've been problem free though. I think my network is fine (every test I've done with anything else plugged into that adaptor like a laptop gets great bandwidth) but I do suffer from weird random HD300 slideshow mode sometimes. Still haven't figured out the cause but tend to get it fixed eventually (sometimes by rebooting server and power cycling HD300, sometimes by giving up until the next day when it suddenly 'works'. )

From the firmware on my HD300, it appears that the only wireless adapter that is going to work is something based on the Ralink RT2870 chipset. I've appended modinfo output which shows what devices the driver supports. You can use something like http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids to map the vendor/device to a product you can buy. However, beware that vendors often keep the same product name, and swap out the wireless chipset with a different, incompatible one. That's what makes buying wireless cards for linux a nightmare. If I were you, I'd just get the official adapter from SageTV. For the money you might save, it is not worth the potential hassle.

Drew

The only downside of the Sage adapter is that it only supports 2.4 GHz, no 5GHz

Thanks to all that replied. I understand the technical requirements for using one of the two recommended usb adapters. Here's my complaint though. First, I don't think the requirement is spelled out in requirements for the HD 300. It does not state that you must use one of the two adapters. That's a marketing problem. Second, the cost. I just spent $29.95 for the adapter and almost half for shipping ($14.49). I'll have to wait a week to recieve the adapter because SageTV can't ship any more efficiently (I purchase from NewEgg, also in California, and it takes about two days and does not cost $14.49 per shipment). I hope support is more efficient when I need it.

You can get the adapter that works from NewEgg. I did.
