Thumbnails

Not sure if this been asked before but im new to sagetv, been really happy with it since i got it a few weeks back but my only concern is that whenever i used thumbnails for my videos it seem to take the whole system slows down almost to a crawling point or freezes. anyway to to solved this or should i just stop using thumbnails all together.

If you are using HDx00 extenders, check out this thread: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52499

How big are the thumbnails that you are using? I have HD200s and an HD300 set up as media extenders for a SageTV server, and I try to keep my thumbnails under 50K bytes each, and performance is OK over a 100mbps network connection. I've got around 300 ripped discs...

I'm not sure how much more help I can be, since I don't use standalone mode, and my performance is OK. However, maybe someone else can help, but providing more information would be good. For instance, how many thumbnails do you currently have? Are they all located on a single hard drive, or do they span multiple hard drives (mine are spread over three drives, and my response pauses when it needs to spin up another drive). How fast is the network connection between your HD300 and your workstation? Once you have selected a video to watch, are there any performance issues?

Even though you've got a gigabit connection, the maximum that the HD300 can support is 100mbps. Even still, 10 30-40k thumbnails should transfer and display almost instantly. Are your connections all wired, or is there any wireless connections between the HD300 and the computer?

Also, one thing you might be interested in is this thread, which gives a way to reboot the HD300 via command line, instead of having to unplug and plug in the unit: http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35464

Are you using the beta 20110124-2 firmware? If you are I'd be interested to see the debug logs when this happens.

If you have a usb hard drive available, I'd copy the 10 videos and their thumbnails to the drive and connect it directly to the HD300, and try it with the HD300 disconnected from the network. That might help narrow down if the problem is inside the HD300 or not.

Also, what version of firmware are you running? That may also help in the diagnosis of the problem (in case someone else has run into the same issue).

You might want to try to upgrade your HD300 to one of the more recent (beta) versions of the firmware to see if that takes care of the problem. Prior to upgrading, make the preparations to downgrade back to the 20101007-0 firmware, in case the upgrade leaves you worse off than you currently are.

I realize that you have an HD300 but I had the same problem when I first got my HD200 and ran it in stand alone mode. It turned out that the size of my thumbnails were too large.

I downloaded Infanview which allowed me to set the size of each thumbnail. I set all of mine to 230x230 pixels. This solved my performance problem with cycling through videos.

The image size (# of pixels; WxH) is the important part, not the compressed size of the file. Make sure the images are not too large.
