AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition?
I'm considering building a new server for SageTv so I can centralize my distribution and cut down on the Cable boxes. I was going to use a Q6600 Quad Core & MB that I had kicking around, but that got eaten up when my UnRaid box died. So I was looking at the following combo:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...17305&csid=_22 But I wondered if this would have a enough power to run two HVR2250s and perhaps one HD tuner with Comskip and multiple transcodes. Option B is to buy something cheaper and get the Q6600 back from the UnRaid box, as it does not need much power. STV currently sits in my office on a QX9650, but I'd rather not use that. |

More than enough. Keep in mind your digital tuners just streams the recording to your hard drive with no processing or cpu use. Only comskip will tax your cpu and a quad core is not only good but good enough.

I went to Toms CPU charts after I posted and it seems that my Q6600 is an old dog compared to the Phenom. :-( I also found some better pricing too. |

Personally I'd look at getting Supermicro X7SPA or X7SPE and use that for the unRAID box. You really don't need a Q6600 for an unRAID box.

Agreed, but my Old A8nSLI died of BIOS issues (repeatedly), so I replaced it with what I had.

I understand, my point was I'd probably buy new hardware for the unRAID box and user your Q6600 box for Sage, rather than buying new, powerful hardware for your Sage box.

I have this CPU for my desktop (actually I have the 2 core which I got for $60 o BF unlocked to 4 cores) and it is awesome. We have 3 way multiseat going (3 people using the computer at the same time) and I can be running Handbrake, playing HD videos and games and the same time without anybody noticing.

If I replace the UnRaid MB I want 8 Sata ports, which doesn't leave too many cheap choices. Best I've seen is this one: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813128444 Which is not a lot different than going with the Phenom and I don't have to worry about two machines. I probably won't do this until they run Fiber to my house and I can ditch the Cable Company, which won't until late 2011. |
