SageTVService refuses to die.

Hi All,

I know I need to file a bug report. However, has anyone else experienced issues since V7 where the SageTVService (running in service mode) process seems to get hung? I cannot stop the service through Windows services, and it also will not end if you try to kill it in task manager, the only solution is to reboot the server. I've been having this problem on a nearly weekly basis.

I have two HD-PVR's running the 1.0.5.3 driver set, along with an AverMedia A180. It seems that the service hangs more frequently when attempting to watch live TV. Server operating system is Windows XP SP3 - 32-bit.

I only have one client - an STX-HD100 running the current release of firmware.

Again, I will submit a bug report. I was just curious if anyone else has seen similar issues (service hanging and unable to be 'killed'). A quick search of the forums seems to make me think I'm the only one that has to reboot to kill the service.

Have you used the Service control panel that comes with Sage? I created a shortcut to it on the desktop for easier access. This is the proper way you should always start and stop SageTV Service.

Using the Windows Services console to start and stop services (including the SageTV service) is perfectly legitimate. So are net stop and net start from a command prompt. There's nothing special about the SageTV service that requires use of the SageTVServiceControl applet; that applet is just a convenience for users unfamiliar with the regular Windows service controls.

I had the same issue a while ago. I upgraded v6 to v7 and the service would not stop when it go to the top of the Java Heap. I rebuilt the properties file from scratch using detailed setup, to fix another problem, and my service hangs disappeared. Not sure if this pertains to you, but just my experience.

I had a similar problem. Uninstalling and reinstalling Sage worked for me. But, make sure you uninstall from the Sage program, not just Windows. I would expect both Windows and Sage use the same list of necessary changes to uninstall, but Windows uninstall didn't seem to get everything and I saw Sage service still running afterwards.

When I had this it usually accompanied problems with the HD-PVR and Sage support told me my issue was a Hauppauge driver problem with the HD-PVRs. So far my problems have gone away after upgrading my PC, OS (XP to Win7), SageTV V6 to V7 and PCI USB card (NEC chipset). I believe what fixed my problems was MOSTLY the PCI USB card I used.

This kind of sounds like my problem where Java garbage collection bungs things up for long periods of time. Sometimes for several minutes.
