This is interesting, I just saw this thread. I have the same issue described by others. I don't understand why a sleeping hard drive would cause this problem; I'm assuming the sage server is a multithreaded application and also that of course the drive that is being read from at the time of playback is not asleep. So why would another of the drives needing to wake up (e.g. for a media scan) cause a delay in playback? This doesn't make sense technically to me. The thread that is dedicated to the media scan should be able to block on the device that is being woken up without having any impact at all on the thread that is suppling the data to the media extender.

It's an OS thing. I have a number of drives in my Windows 7 client machine and for whatever reason everything sort of pauses as I hear the drives power up. For example, surfing the web and reading the forum. I'm not sure why they are being accessed from just surfing the web but I click a link and nothing happens. I hear the drives powering up (4 drives) and when the last one powers up the link now works. On my Sage server I make sure the drives stay powered up and never see that issue.

My "cure" for this situation involved turning the SageTV Service on. Once I did that, the problem went away. (Windows Vista)

I've been running mine as a service for years now. Not sure why that helped you but it definitely doesn't make my issues go away. I'm running Win7 though.

I bumped my ram from 2gb to 4gb and put my power saving on the drives to 2 hour idle time and my problem now only appears maybe once a week to every two weeks.

I am having this issue as well, but slightly different. For me it happens constantly. When a video is first loaded it runs fine for 2 or 3 minutes then starts the pause/catchup processs. It doesn't matter the time of day or how many times a day I try it (some mentioned it was happening at a particular itme of the hour or it would only happen once).. for me it happens no matter the time of day.

A few things I can add to the conversation.

I have been using HD100 extenders with no problems, got an HD300 and immediately started having this problem. I have switched back to the HD100 and the problem goes away. Switching back to the 300 and it comes back. My 100 in the bedroom NEVER has this issue.

From that I conclude it is a problem with either the 300 or it's configuration.

i will open a tech support case on Monday.

I haven't read the whole thread so I don't know if someone has already suggested this but I had the same problem with live tv pausing for a second or two then fast forwarding to catch up. With me it was that the HD200 was overheating. I put it on top of a netbook cooling fan and I haven't seen the problem since.
