HD-PVR component video out question
Howdy!
This is probably a dumb question, but nonetheless... Are the component video loop outputs on the HD-PVR used to display SageTV recordings/live TV on the TV? Or do you use your graphics card output? I can't see why one would use a graphics card since I've never seen one with component outputs. The graphics card I'm considering purchasing has and HDMI output but I don't think that's relevant for and HD-PVR and Sage, but I could be mistaken. Can anyone post a schematic or provide a link showing inputs/outputs for the HD-PVR and their TV, stereo receiver, etc.? Thanks.

The Setup Box (your source) has components out. These go in to the HDPVR. The HDPVR's component out are not used. It is connected to the PC by USB. You can then connect the PC to your receiver/tv with whatever connection your video card supports.

I have my system diagram posted here. The only thing missing is that the SageTV Client feeds my receiver, which feeds my TV. Everything recorded by SageTV is stored on the hard drive and the files are played back. Technically, you never watch "live" TV in SageTV because it must be recorded first, even if just for a couple of seconds.

The component outputs (and also the audio outputs) can be used for passthrough mode. That way you can passthrough signals through the hd pvr without modification to a tv or avr (basically it's plain live tv). This has nothing to do with Sage (or any other dvr application for that matter), since for those the hd pvr encodes the signal (into mpeg4) and communicates via USB as stated above.

Thanks for the responses, but I'm still a little confused. If I have a video card with an HDMI out, and a motherboard with optical S/PDIF out, I can connect those to corresponding inputs on the TV (or the stereo receiver) and watch/hear SageTV recordings?

Connect the HDMI out from your video card to your HDTV or receiver. Then you can watch and hear your SageTV. Or connect HDMI out from your video card and the spdif out from your mb to your receiver and/ receiver and TV. Then you can watch and hear your SageTV. Leave the components out of your HD-PVR out of the equation.
