Now nothing plays.

My system was working but I have been messing with the tuners adding and deleting trying to get my setup how I want it. Now nothing plays either on the Win7 server machine or the extenders. Pre-recorded or live the video starts playing and the seconds tick by but no video shows. Same with a music album, the seconds tick by but no sound.

What have I done?

This is the reason that you should be periodically imaging your system. If you had an image at a point in time when the system worked, you could be back to that working state in 30 minutes or less.

You might need to uninstall/re-install SageTV. Maybe someone else has a better suggestion.

You did make a backup of your Sage directory in toto before you started tinkering right?

At this point, without knowing exactly what you did, the best thing I could recommend would be to shutdown sage (and the service if you are running in service mode) and make a backup of your sage directory. Copy it to another directory, compress it to a zip file, or both.

Uninstall Sage. Delete the sage directory (but NOT the backup) then reinstall sage. Go through the setup and get your tuners working again. Set up your recording directories, then copy the wiz.bin into the new installation from your backup and see where things stand.

I'm not as big on imaging as Dave is; it will catch up to me one day, but for now I just make sure I have consistent backup of my Sage directory. Anything else I can reinstall

As far as backup goes, there are 2 kinds of users; those who already backup and those who will backup

After you get the system working again, you should image it. There is some free imaging software out there if you don't want to pay anything. If you don't have an image, Murphy's Law will cause your system to fail. If you have an image, your system will be less likely to fail!

I image all my systems at home and hundreds of servers at work. Imaging has saved the day hundreds of times over the years for me at home, and mostly at work. You can even recover individual files and directories with imaging. I routinely use it for testing demo programs at home. I recover the system with an image after testing the demo software. The uninstalls never remove everything, but recovering to an image completely removes everything.

Turns out a unplug/reboot of the extenders fixed it....

Hear what your saying about the imaging but kinda got out of the habit since having a WHS. Can you recommend a free product, my Acronis doesn't do Win7.

Here is what I use. Have the pay copy for my "main" machine, the free one for all the others, as all I do is a full metal backup of the system drive, once a month.

http://www.macrium.com/ReflectFree.asp

About the only thing it doesn't currently do, is restore to a smaller drive than it started with.

That's a dead link, maybe you could re-post the URL.

I use Windows 7 and Acronis 2011 on the laptop. The other computers are Windows XP using the Acronis Workstation version and older versions of Ghost.

You might try Partition Image is not Ghost, PING, which is free. Sometimes the recoveries were not successful in the past with PING, but the product might have improved. Years ago the Ghost recoveries sometimes failed before version 7 and Acronis went through some bugs years ago where recoveries failed. Both Ghost and Acronis have had reliable recoveries in recent years.

If you want to be sure it will work, take an image, swap the boot drive and recover the image. If it works, then you know you can recover. If it fails, then replace the boot drive, and you've lost nothing.
