UI crash on playback if service is running

Sagetv has been running fine for a year until a couple of days ago. Now, if the service is running, the UI crashes on playback with a Java error EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION. If the service is not running, no problem. I guess I can run without the service but I thought that it was active up until now. I've installed the latest version of Java, have SageTV version 6 running on a Windows Mediacenter I'd be happy to hear any ideas about what's going on.
