Domain Software
Can you people who have had a domain up and running in your home give me some insight please.
I am wondering what software to use for backups and antivirus for the domain. I know in the past I have seen some small business' using: Symantec Endpoint Protection and Acronis True Image Are these good to use or is there better or just as good but cheaper ones to use. Thanks. |

+1 for Acronis True Image. Not a big fan of Symantec.

I love Acronis. Bare metal restore rules! My Windows Home Server is great for workstation backups. While WHS can't join the domain, it has no problem backing up domain clients, even virtual servers. In fact, my WHS is a virtual server. I haven't tried using it to back up a domain controller. I wonder...
I have System Center Data Protection Manager, but have yet to try it. With the satisfaction WHS has given, I expect DPM would be likwise. As for cheap, WHS is that. Acronis was not. I haven't looked into what DPM cost. It's just part of my M$ partner subscription.

Acronis or storage craft
not a fan of symantec. I've used all of the below in a managed network environment. AVG Kaspersky McAfee Symantic I liked AVG the best... Symentic is cumbersome to use. IMHO nearly any av will do the job as long as you keep it current. AVGs management system was the most intuitive / easiest of any i have tried.

For Antivirus, try Microsoft Security Essentials. Its free: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
For backup, stick with Acronis. I'm using TrueImage 11, it works fine and never needed to upgrade.

For AV, I'm using M$ Forefront Client Security, which works great. You'll want to set up a WUS server to do your updates, but it works great! Once that's all set up, you'll also have the ability to get reports on all the domain members. Update status, installed software, and so on.

Thanks guys. I got Acronis and have an email out to AVG to try and get the AVG Business Edition 2011 for free or significantly reduced price (as I am using the home domain as an educational tool)
Well see if that boat floats... lol |
