You can stick with HDMI if you pick up one of these:

I also thought an additional benefit of the HDMI route with that device would be that the signal staying in the digital realm rather than being converted to analog by the STB for component output and then back to digital by the Colossus.

I don't notice a quality difference going from HDMI to component. My only issue with component is that it adds to cable clutter. Other than that component/spdif and HDMI carry the same signal in this case so converting from digital to analog and back shouldn't show a quality difference on most setups. That's assuming your STB doesn't output a crappy component signal.

I found a slight increase in sharpness. I have DirecTV STBs (HR-21 and HR 24, I think). It could also be in color space conversion and not just analog to digital.

Anyhow, I we're all happy

On a side note, I just tried the release 30151 drivers and they are HORRIBLE for me. Multiple lags (seems like video/audio sync is lost) and stuttering. I went back to 30079 and so far, so good. I upgraded because when I had an HD-PVR in the system as well as the colossus, I found that they didnt play nice together and the colossus recordings would sometimes be a stuttering mess with audio. I've since replace the HD-PVR with a second Colossus, so we'll see how it goes this time around.

Yeah, I wish I would have purchased another HD-PVR when my old one died instead of trying to "upgrade" to Colossus. I say upgrade because I felt the video quality was better using HDMI on the Colossus. I was using DirecTV which encrypts, with HDCP, only premium channels like HBO.

I don't know why I've been so lucky but I still have my Colossus recording all channels I get (HBO, SHOW, STARZ, MAX, TMC, ENCORE) directly from HDMI and DirectTV DVR box. I don't know if my non-DVR boxes would - never tried. Those have HD-PVR's connected to them.

Bob, there are also boxes from Monoprice that takes DVI+SPDIF in and put HDMI out. I run those in the path between the Colossus and DirecTV boxes because they handle the HDCP handshake and allow me to be happy should I ever get those premium channels.

Yes I know. I was going to go that route if they ever turn on HDCP on my box but so far it is clear on all chanels.

HR22-100 - DVR - HDMI to Colossus, SVideo to HVR-2250, Component to HDTV, Networked for HTTP tuning, also plugged into phone line or at least it was originally not sure right now.
H21-200 - Component to HD-PVR, Networked for HTTP tuning
H23-600 - Component to HD-PVR, Networked for HTTP tuning

Other than my problems with Colossus: out of sync occasionally, AAC audio so no sound in SageTV - it works great.

Could it be that they have left HDCP off of DVRs rather than by model number?

OK then must be HR21's then. Get earlier boxes and you might still have HDMI recording then.
