Best guess-will this be better than what's currently in the USB HD-PVR? (or is it about the same. I'm not sure what's in the current model.)

Maybe I'm missing something here, but unless it performs better than the HD-PVR (i.e. fewer problems), I'm not seeing all that much to get excited about.

I think this thing will have its own set of problems. MPEG2 vs H264? Whole new encoding problems?

PCIe 1.x single tuner. I don't have any room in my server and my tuners are all USB. Need to find a Full ATX board for my next server.

How many people use the passthrough feature on their HD-PVR's?

Based on what? History has shown that Hauppauge's first gen products can have problems, but the second generation is very solid. The same thing happened with SD encoders, the WinTV-PVR PCI was somewhat flaky on occasion, kind of like the HD PVR, but the PVR250 that replaced it was the standard for years. I'm optimistic/hopeful that this "gen-2" HD PVR will be like the PVR250 we enjoyed for so long.

MPEG2 will make a number of folks happy as it's easier to deal with.

I don't see why, the encodings with the HD PVR are quite solid.

I just wonder if the switch from H264 to MPEG2 is too much of change and is more of a new product than a 2nd gen. I'm hopeful as well, especially because Hauppauge seems to be the only consumer level company to be building products for this need. They just need a dual chip version instead of passthrough.

I thought that too until I bought my third HD-PVR. I have one (newer rev) that has audio drift issues over SPDIF, audio/video sync issues don't qualify as a solid encoding. For a large number of HD PVR's the encodings are solid.

Do they make an HDFury that does HDMI->HDMI? I would think that would be a hard sell as a non-infringing piece of hardware. Such a device would surely run afoul of the DMCA.

AVC is .H264. So looks like it will do both. The MPEG2 would be a benefit to those playing back on lower power systems as well as I think be easier to edit.

My 2 HD-PVRs occasionally act up, but personally I wouldn't be running to "upgrade" to these. Still, happy to see a potentially better solution pop up. Too bad it's still from Hauppauge.

Info. on the encoder chip: http://www.vixs.com/briefs/XCode_3111_v2.pdf. Looks like it can handle playback well also. Can't tell max bit rate for recording, although it says it can reduce bit rate from 40Mbps down to 64Kbps (not sure I'd be doing that!)

Is this really a switch, or does this card offer both? It says "AVC/MPEG2 HD encoding video codec up to 1080i". Since AVC refers to H.264/MPEG-4 I read this that it supports both encording formats.

But if this card really only supports mpeg2, I'd see this as a step backwards nowadays, since mpeg4 codecs are more efficient compared to mpeg2.

I don't know what I was thinking when I asked that question. I guess the HDfury would be useful if they ever close the analog hole.

I do like the idea of an internal hdpvr though. I will be getting either the original external one or this new one after my tax refund comes back this spring. Unless, of course Sage gets support for CC by then
