STB tuning and Win2008 R2

Currently I run Win2003R2 and use firewire channel changing of my STBs with HD-PVRs for recording. This has worked very reliably.

I am interested in transition to Win2008R2 but in doing so I know the firewire STB drivers will no longer work as they are only available on 32-bit OSs and Win2008R2 is strictly x64.

I would appreciate input on what the most stable / reliable solution is for Win2008R2.

Btw, I do own a USB-UIRT but have not deployed it to date as the firewire channel changing has proven so reliable... is the USB-UIRT the most reliable on Win2008R2?

Thanks in advance.

Would someone please explain to me why it's better to run SageTV on a server os. I have run Sage on Vista basic and now Win7 pro and both have been very stable. What do you get from running Server 03 or 08?

My server isnt dedicated to SageTV. It is also a DC etc...
I would like the advantages of Win2008R2 - and the only issue seems to be firewire channel changing right now...

Recommendations for channel changing under Win2008R2?

Oh. I see. What is a DC?
Since you already have a USB-UIRT you could set that up. I hear that they work very well and you'll still get the features from server '08.

DC = domain controller

I hear that the USB-UIRT introduces significant delays in channel switching.... is there a way to reduce that?

Domain controller, of course, how could I have forgotten that?
A domain controller at home. Cool!
Not much you can do about the channel change lag. Do you do a lot of channel surfing or live tv viewing?

I dont do any real channel surfing- even with firewire channel changing it is still doing hd-pvr usb recording ( a couple second delay). I navigate through the channel guide as necessary. But mostly watch recorded shows ( as i expect most people do)

I am just trying to avoid 2 additional potential gotchas 1) increased delay to liveTV 2) less reliable IR tuning

Have you been able to get a very reliable system with USB-UIRT? What driver version are you running with the HD-PVRs? Are you using MultiEXETuner?

It will be a great day when there are 64-bit firewire STB drivers
