Best ANALOG tuner to complement my HDHR ?!?!
im looking to add an analog tuner to go with my HDHR. i would prefer something that is external (usb). i am running win7 -64 bit.
i have my eyes on the Hauppauge WinTV HVR-850 USB. can any of you recommend this ?? |

The 850 is a software encoder. This means that it uses your server's cpu to actually convert the raw video capture into MPEG2. This often causes a loss of quality and/or audio/video drift. Software encoders are terrible. While I do not have any experience with the 850, I usually recommend going with hardware encoders. This means for USB devices you are limited to the hvr1950.

wouldn't it make more sense to just have your cpu do the work (i have a 6-core 2.6ghz) compared to a little card doin' the work?? all im using the pc for is sage and playon...

No. The processor on the little card is designed to do one thing very well while your mega 6 core CPU is designed to do lots of things fairly well. Don't waste your money on a card without a hardware encoder.
