Does / Is anyone working on a way to edit metadata of music?

I think maybe Phoneix will do this. . .although I'm not sure. . .(which btw I really miss my fanart showing up for Music artists, which I worked really hard to get).

Seems like BMT could do this too. . .although I don't see anything in there about it. . .

There is also the "Edit Metadata Plugin" but again that seems to only work for shows. . .

What type of metadata are you trying to update. I've found that foobar and mp3tag are really excellent at metadata editing.

I have software already ( I think I'm using mp3 tag), but I meant to be able to do it as a plugin in the UI to sage

sdsean, I've had a bit of a play with this and should be able to have something in the next version of the "Read, Write and Edit Metadata" plugin.

Are there any specific properties you're after?

basically just being able to edit the standard IDE3 tags. . . it'd also be great if there was some sort of batch mode, but that's not really what you plugin does. . .

Track Title
Artist
Album
Year
Track (x / x, padded 0's on the front allowed)
Genre
Album Artist
Disc Number (x / x, padded 0's on the front allowed)
album art (realize this may be tricky since it can be embeeded or links and you'd probably have to browse for a file, etc).

I've looked at this a couple of times. BMT does have some code in place to handle music fanart, when it arrives... but I've I've never fully implemented a music fanart provider. It is on the rather large todo list though

I've added some basic Music metadata editing to the latest version of the "Read, Write and Edit Metadata" plugin.

FWIW - and no offense to Kiwi or anyone else who has put in work on auto-tagging - I'm a believer in manually doing MP3 tagging. I like to have songs tagged from their original albums, when they first came out, and I have not found an auto-tagger that has any ability to search for the earliest version of a song. Seems like most of them stick you with a compilation album from the past 5 years, even if the song is 50 years old. I don't like having songs in my library by Elvis or Sinatra labeled as being from 2009. I also don't like having a favorite 80s hit from 1983 being labeled as from a "greatest hits of the 80s" compilation from 2004. When I play songs from the year "2008" in my library, I don't want to hear a Christmas song from 1935, just because it was on a compilation released in 2008.

Plus, most of the time when the auto-tag finds a compilation, it ends up sticking your "Album artist" tag with "Various Artists", and then you get this mess of songs listed under "Various artists".

Even if I own a greatest hits CD or a box set, when I rip it, I will manually go through and re-tag all of the songs with their original albums. The only songs that get left with the "Greatest Hits" tag are the ones that were first released on that set. Tedious? Yes. I have over 4500 MP3s. But as of this past weekend, I'm almost done.

Am I alone in this?

I am in complete agreement on this as well. In fact, I have no qualms about using external programs to prepare my media before making it available for use. I do the same as you in regards to fetching the "original" art and info for greatest hits compilations. I also will batch tag songs from artists that I may not do this for - essentially creating my own greatest hits album with my own cover.

My desire for the music module is simple. Allow me to view/filter by my tags, and somehow allow me to use a full screen backdrop (ala .properties files) to give it a little more pizazz.

I don't think that jrekiwi's plugin does automatic updating, so no need to worry there. His plugin simply allows you to edit the metadata. In the event that you've already properly tagged your items, then great, if not, then you can edit the album, year, etc, to make it right.

BMT, on the other hand, will probably, at some time, have the ability to automatically populate metadata and album art. Of course, like any plugin, if people want that feature, then they'll install it and use it, if not, then they'll skip it. Personally, it's something that I want, because I'm not quite so anal about the metadata. I've ripped over 500 cds and I've probably only manually edited a handful of them. From bmt's perspective, I'm actually more concerned about fetching album art, which I'm lacking. Currently I don't use SageTV for music which is why I haven't added this feature to bmt yet

pjpjpjpj, not quite sure where you got the idea of auto-tagging from as the sdsean was asking about "editing" music metadata.

Put me down for wanting BMT to support fetching album art please

I relentlessly tag things too and they don't get merged into my music library until they are tagged correctly!

Fetching album art = good.
Stomping on my hard work and overwriting metadata in music files = bad.

I agree that I like controlling all my own meta data and want vehemently to be able to tag it myself, which I do.

The edit meta data plugin simply allow you to do just that. . .but its really just a nice to have for one off cases, and of course using a 10ft GUI to do this for lots of files is not really the best way. .

All also wouldn't mind if BMT had the ability to auto-search/fill in just like it does now for video content, so long as I can edit all the fields myself if I don't like something. . .

I believe in BMT, so long as you have the option to "cancel" what gets filled out from a search this is fine. . .

oh, and JREkiwi. . .thanks so much for adding this. . now when I have one-off issues its very nice to be able to correct it in the UI.

The best tagging software I've ever used is jaikoz. Funny name, but it gets all original data using year or whatever. It also lets you process large amounts of files and change them via spreadsheet style.

This is the one I use. Very accurate, flexible, and fast. Only took like ~20 hours to tag 8,500 MP3's. lol
