High CPU w/HDPVR Files. [RESOLVED]

I just loaded 7.0.19RC3. For OTA MPG and downloaded H.264 (Tekzilla, HD Nation) I'm seeing about 10% CPU usage (E6600 C2D). When I play an HDPVR file (Best Quality) I'm getting 50% CPU. I'm using the ArcSoft Decoder and I'm pretty sure this didn't occur in 7.0.18.

P

Edit: ***DISREGARD*** I just reloaded 7.0.18RC2. I guess 50% CPU is normal, wow. I thought the 9600GT would handle HDPVR files?

For anyone searching: Switch your decoder to the Microsoft DTV-DVD decoder...down to 5% CPU for 720p HD-PVR files.

Since you switched to the Microsoft decoder this may be a mute point however, you may want to check the properties for the Arcsoft Video Decoder. There is a good chance that the DXVA1.0 and DXVA2.0 are not enabled for hardware acceleration.

I have found the HA disabled more than once for the Arcsoft Video Decoder.

There are several programs that will allow you to view the properties of the Arcsoft decoder. I have been using GraphStudio.

When I use the decoders in Win7 to play back TS files from my HDPVR, I get a "jerky" glitch about once every 5 to 10 seconds, while the Arcsoft and CoreAVC are smooth but use more CPU (35 ~ 45%). This is with my STB locked at 720P, it's worse at 1080i, and a Radeon HD4550. Anybody else?
I believe someone explained it as the difference between 29.97 and 30 frames per second isn't handled properly in the MS decoder and it has to "catch up" at specific intervals. I have no idea if that's true, but I notice quite a difference between the MS decoders and the others (unfortunately).

I don't notice any issues playing 1080i HD-PVR recordings with the MS decoder; I've got an nVidia chip though.

I asked this already in another thread a couple of days ago, but didn't receive an anwer (so I'll try again here...). While I'm able to view the Arcsoft decoder properties, I'm not able so select the DXVA check boxes and save them. Selecting works, but whenever I reopen the properties they show up unchecked.
And yes I run Graphedit / Filtermanager in admin mode.

My understanding is in the latest version of Arcsoft TMT it doesn't allow you to use all the features of the decoders in other apps. I believe there is a workaround or use an older version to access all the features.

I'm using older decoders that came with the HD PVR. Does that apply to those as well?

Using RadLight, enabling DXVA1.0 and 2.0 in ArcSoft decoder (that came with HDPVR, v. 2.25.174.64) doesn't "stick". Going back to the properties page shows the settings are deactivated. Where can one find an older version as mentioned above, and will the quality be as good? I have to say the picture quality is near perfect with the current Arcsoft decoder.

You'll have to install Total Media Theater 2 and grab ASVid.ax out of the Common Files>"MPEG Engine" folder. It won't run on Win 7, so just grab the codec and uninstall. Opening it in DSFM (or RadLight) shows all DXVA options "checked". I still use TMT3, so I don't know what registering TMT2's codec will do...the MS decoder looks great to me.

Thanks, I'll give it a try just out of curiosity. I'm sure I can locate an older copy of TMT (not TME). I could use the extra CPU time for Placeshifter or converting files.

Indeed, it seems only those olders versions that "officially" expose the Arcsoft dshow filters are using DXVA. Newer versions for which you can still register the filters manually don't support DXVA.

For those that have a HD PVR, only the version from the original CD does support DXVA. The slightly newer TME that's on HD PVR CD 2.2 does not.

I got a copy of TMT v2, extracted the ASVid.ax (which was v. 2.25.83.43) but when the newer decoder (v. 2.25.174.64) was replaced with the older one, still can't enable DXVA with RadLight. I guess I'll have to figure out GraphStudio and try that. Actually RadLight errors out with a "missing MagCore.dll" when going to the properties page on the older ASVid.ax.
I must be nuts - Sage works almost perfectly, so it uses a little more CPU than I desire, but maybe I should just leave it alone....

Your version of asvid is probably too new. I got DXVA working with 2.25.82.43 (did you mean 82 or 83?).
On the other hand, if you got a reasonable fast CPU, why bother if playback is fine.

It is 2.25.83.43, I'll find an older version and try it again.

One strange thing... a few months ago I installed TME1 on another Win7 laptop - ASVid.ax put itself in "Common Files\Arcsoft\Mpeg Engine" with a whole bunch of other files. I never bothered to look until now, as it works fine.

On my Sage desktop computer, "Common Files\Arcsoft\Mpeg Engine" has only one file. ASVid.ax is in a folder at "Program Files\Arcsoft\TotalMedia Extreme\Codecs" with many other files.

UAC is disabled on both.

The laptop ASVid.ax shows DXVA enabled in RadLight. But, dropping that file (83) into the codecs folder on my Sage computer doesn't allow DXVA - after registering and rebooting.

I wonder why the two installs of TME use entirely different folder structures?

No big deal, everything works fine,

Rob

Just an update- In a google search, I found ASVid.ax v.2.27.300.103, replaced the old ax, registered the new one and CPUusage is between 3 - 5% now. Seems to work, froze up on me once, but running fine now. DXVA is enabled.

Rob

edit: Freezes up, new ASVid.ax codec doesn't work. Back to the old one without DXVA.
