HD300 Aspect Ratio Trouble

The HD300 seems to have a problem with the aspect ratio. There are two places to change the aspect ratio. One method is to hit the 'aspect' button while the video is playing. The other is with the 'options' menu, also while the video is playing.

In the 'options' menu, the default aspect ratio can be set to 'fill'. However, this default does not work. When stopping and starting the video, the aspect ratio always returns back to 'source'.

The aspect ratio problem does not occur on the HD200.

Is there a way to force the aspect ratio to 'fill' on the HD300 without pressing the aspect button each and every time a video is played?

How are you setting the default? While the AR you want is highlighted, are you pressing Right, then setting it as the default? I just tried that, then stopped playback, & started another video - the AR was then the new default I had set.

I play a video, while the video is playing, I select 'options' on the remote control. I then arrow down to 'aspect ratio' with the remote control. I select 'fill', arrow right, then enter to 'set as the default aspect ratio'.

When I repeat the procedure above to verify that the default setting is set to 'fill', it is set to 'fill'. However, the default never actually changed. It is still on 'source'.

So, each time a video is started, the 'aspect' button on the remote control has to be pressed to switch to 'fill'. If the video that is playing is stopped, and started again, then the 'aspect' button has to be pressed again to get it back to 'fill'.

The problem is easy to reproduce. I am using version 7.0.16.238 and java version 1.6.0_10. The HD-300 firmware is 20100909-0. I am using the default STV.

I have not seen this type of aspect problem with the HD-200.

I suggest you file a bug report so SageTV can follow up to see what is happening on your system. Setting the default AR works on my system & I don't know what would cause that type of problem for you.

I have changed out a HD-200 with a HD-300 on my main tv. The thing I don't understand is why with my 200 I had the ar set to source and it filled the sceen up just fine and with the 300 I had to go in and set it to fill? I kept changing the boxes out comparing to each other what the settings was and I thought I would try and change the ar and it filled up the screen. So why is there a difference?

I was getting aggravated over the ar not staying where I set it at. I think maybe the little arrow needs changed or there needs to be a better desciption of how to make what ever you want to be the default. I kept selecting the fill and it would not stay and after seeing your response above about right arrow I walked right in and made it the default. In the manual I did not see anything about using the right key or menu. I guess it is a visual thing that some of us don't pick up on when we don't mess with these every day. Any how now back to my original question above.

It doesn't seem like this was resolved. I have the default aspect ratio set to "Fill". I start watching a 4:3 DVD and when I press Menu it shows the aspect ratio set properly as "Fill" but it has black bars on the sides. I select the aspect ratio button in the Menu, change it to "Source" (the display doesn't change), and then switch it back to "Fill" and then the Display fills properly? It seems like the default mode is not really set on "Fill" even though it is indicated so?

Are you sure the 4:3 DVD isn't actually a 4:3 image that has been placed into a 16:9 format? I have many television DVD's from the 90's that (since they were originally filmed in 4:3) are put into "widescreen format" by just adding black bars to the sides automatically. On true 4:3 content, I have no issues with using "fill" to fill out the video left to right (just watched a Star Trek DS9 issue episode and hit fill to verify it works).

Yes, because as I described simply toggling to "Source" and then back to "Fill" removes the black bars and stretches the image as expected.
