Angry Just fried my HDPVR

Yup, was doing some clean up and plug an adapter for my external usb drive in to it. 12v 1.5A, fried it.

I'm still with in my 2yr warranty period with Hauppague.

Do you think I'll have a problem getting a new one?

Well, if you know that you damaged it by plugging in the wrong voltage, you can't really expect them to cover it under warranty.

I suppose if you don't mind having a guilty conscience, you could try to exchange it and see what they say, but it's really no different than if you had dropped it in a swimming pool or mis-treated it in some other way that damaged it.

For that matter, your question could just as easily have been "Hey I lost a book that I just bought. Do you think anyone would mind if I just shoplifted another one from the bookstore?"

Ouch that stinks. It really blows my mind that companies still design hardware without putting in 2 diodes to protect from this. For less than a fraction of a cent per unit, they could prevent this from happening and they still don't do it If they don't want to take the time to "engineer" a solution, there are plenty of Vregs out there that already have overvoltage and reverse polarity protection built in. All they would have to do is spend a few more seconds to pick one out.

Just ask them then it won't be shoplifting. They fixed a PVR-500 for me for a reasonable fee. I didn't have to buy a new one. Granted mine was just reattaching the coax connector so it was real cheap but it never hurts to ask. Just don't lie to them. They would probably be able to tell what happened anyway.

For any electonics I get that isn't already marked by the manufacture I always take a piece of paper write on it what it is for and tape it to the brick.

Also do what makes you sleep good at night.
