Droid software recommendations

The family (ok, the wife) will be getting a Droid X in a week or so. This is our first android device. Looking for any recommendations for software.

In particular, what do you use to sync music to the device? My collection is mostly FLAC.

What about syncing pictures back to my server where all of our pictures are stored?

Any other "must have" apps/ accessories?

I've simply downloaded all my music to a 32gb SD card. So I am not sure what program one might use if you wanted to keep it in sync (I rarely buy new music now).

Be sure to check out the Android Forums. I'm sure you can find an answer to that question as well as all you other questions.

PS - I got the DroidX and love it!

PSS - There is a Sage Android client that Fonceur has developed.

Thanks. I've been eye-ing Fonceur's app thread.

Just got a shipping notice... wow, a week ahead of the promised date That gives me a week to play with it before I have to give it to my wife... Can I play with it prior to activating it (and it taking over her phone number)?

Sic - force feeding the SD card is my plan to start...guess I'll 'spearment some soon.

You could try the doubletwist app and desktop application. I've never used it personally, but it looks fairly decent, and it says that it supports syncing music, etc, to your phone.

And if you are looking for apps, then both the doubletwist site and the AppBrain site, allow you to search for new apps from your desktop browser, which is handy. And from the AppBrain site you can even push apps to your phone, if you want.

And one final note about "permissions". Android apps state their permissions before you install them. So be sure to read the the permissions, and then decide if you want to install the app or not. ie, if you are installing a wallpaper app and it's requiresing access to your contacts, and to send text messages, then you'd probably not want to install that app. It's scary some of the permissions that some apps "want", but the permissions thing is great feature in android. I've installed some of the same apps on my ipod and on my android device, yet on the ipod, it doesn't give you any indication of what the app is going to be looking at (iphone apps have access to everything). Personally, I wish desktop applications had to explicitly state their permissions when you install them.

pretty sure you can't. IIRC, you have to activate it and enter a google login/password before you ever can hit the home screen.

You can then connect via wifi, set up your google acct on it, and add google-voice, and use it as a phone via wifi, all without activation on a cellular network..
