Question Is there a need for a Sage6 version?

I need to get an idea on how much of a need there is to back port BMT 4.5+ to work in Sage6. The last version of bmt to work in Sage6 was 4.0-beta21, and since that version, I've focused on building a Sage7 specific version because, in Sage7, there were a number of APIs added that made the development of BMT much easier as it related to storing/updating metadata.

If there is enough demand, then I'll consider building another Sage6 version.

I don't really have the time to do this just for fun, so I won't even consider it unless there is enough demand. And even if do it, it probably won't match the Sage7 feature list.

Well... those results are promising, so far... I only have 2 people that would like a Sage6 specific version, which is less than I would have expected, but is good news... since, I really don't have the time to do backport the changes, but I would have considered it, if there was a huge demand.

My philosophy is that if there's a feature I want in BMT (or any other customization) and it's only available for SageTV v7, then I'll just upgrade. I intend to wait a while longer for that, but once a "must have" feature gets released, I have every intention of making the move. In all seriousness, I don't expect any dev to continue supporting older versions of SageTV once the dev moves to the latest one. As much as I'd love that to happen only once the final release of SageTV is out, I know that's not realistic.

I'm still on 6.6 and am waiting for Ortus/Phoenix and some more easily done customization capability, however, I don't expect you to spend time dealing with v6. I will upgrade when the time comes, and would rather you spend your time nailing v7

Thanks again for your contributions

I'm straight up not upgrading to 7.0 unless there is a TVexplorer type add on. So far, besides XBMC themes, I haven't seen anything in Sage 7 worth upgrading for. The one thing I want improved is music and that hasn't been touched or improved significantly (or at all really). Granted I have only played with it for a week or so before uninstalling it, but if something major was added that I wanted I should've seen it in a week, I think.

Right now for me, its upgrade to 7 and loose the tied for 1st most important UI addon (UI addon, BMT is still first overall ) and gain nothing much. I also don't like betas much in commercial software but that's a very small issue. I would use it if it added something I wanted.

I will upgrade to 7 if I don't have to loose anything, just to keep up with things, but not till it goes gold and out of beta. So I will beg you to please keep the Sage 6 version of BMT updated. At the very least till Sage 7 goes stable?

Thank you Stuckless!

Just a FYI. It's very stable, most of the fixes are bug fixes none of which are show stoppers.

Obviously it's your system and you can do what you would like but I wouldn't let the Beta tag keep you from trying the latest greatest of Sage...

Beta is going to Release Candidate in the next few weeks anyway.

I'm not upgraded to sage7 yet, but I'm sure I will eventually when a bunch of the new customizations come out.

Until then I don't know what I'm missing from newer versions of BMT so I can get by with the current build.

Version 7 actually went to RC recently. There is also a TVE plugin for version 7. I use it all the time and have only found one minor bug, but I may be the only one to have noticed it.

@JetreL, right I understand in your setup you feel its stable. However, if Sage doesn't call it stable, and there is nothing motivating me to upgrade, then why fool around with a beta or a release candidate for a commercial software? I understand that some of you do have things in the new version that you are very keen on and that's great. For you, going beta makes sense. It does not for me.

My upgrade path is wholly motivated by staying current, nothing else, at this point anyway. Besides cosmetic things, there is nothing in the new version that is compelling to me. As I have previously posted, music and an open, standards based plugin/database system that I can develop for is what I want. No I am not trying to get into that OT discussion here . Lets just say the things I want to do are all in the UI/database and, not being a professional developer, studio is just too much of a pain to learn when I have a bunch of tools I already know how to use. I got neither of these. Given that I have to pay for the upgrade just to stay current, I will much prefer to wait till after it goes stable for real, not anecdotally. If I can get away with it, and by that I mean developers like Stuckless continuing to support v6, I will most likely wait till the next version of 7 to be released before upgrading.

@toricred, thanks! I did not know that. I didn't see that posted in the TVexplorer thread and I am away from home right now. I actually popped in to see if I could figure out a way to get metadata on my standalone HD200 and just saw this thread. BMT is so important to my use of SageTV that I wanted to chime in.

If you don't mind, for future reference, could you link me the thread?

The version for v7 does not have it's own thread. The installation instructions are buried in the TVE for the default STV thread. See this post for installation. Unfortunately i have not been able to declare the dependencies I want yet in v7 so it has not been uploaded to the plugin repository. It requires some manual intervention to get it installed properly (ie making sure you have a copy of the sagemc.jar file in your ..\JARS\ folder).

That's probably explains why I couldn't find it in the repository Do you need some help getting the dependencies resolved... if so, PM me and we can work it out.
