Unhappy Best Sequence for Rebooting HDPVR?

Can someone remind me what the best sequence is for dealing with an HDPVR after it goes wonky? Here's what I've been doing under Windows 7 (yes, I know it's not officially supported):

1) Shut down Sage interface (I run Sage as a service)
2) Shut down Sage service
3) Use the "Safely Remove USB Hardware" action to "release" the HDPVR
4) Power off the HDPVR, wait a few seconds
5) Power on the HDPVR, wait a few seconds
6) Start up Sage service
7) Start up Sage interface

This restored the HDPVR functionality, up until a couple of days ago. Last night it didn't, and I had to spend about 45 minutes doing various things, including rebooting the system, to finally get the HDPVR to function again...for ten whole minutes, when it crashed again.

As an aside, at an early stage in that 45 minute journey I looked at the Windows task list, and discovered that there were >>two<< instances of SageTVService (or whatever it's called) running. This was after I'd tried to start and stop the service, and noticed that the service control app "hung" for a while. I've never seen a situation where there were two SageTVServices running at the same time. I can't imagine that's a good thing. I couldn't even use Task Manager to shut down one of those instances -- I had to reboot the system. Has anyone else run into this? If so, what causes it, and how do you avoid it?

If you're running the SageTV v7 beta it will always be running 2 instances. One is used for facilitating plugin installs and in reloading Sage.

For HDPVR lock-ups on Vista, I just:

1) Stop Sage Service (via Computer / Manage / Services)
2) Power off HDPVR
3) Power on HDPVR
4) Start Sage Service

The client(s) don't seem to mind not being able to reach the server/service for a few minutes. If I start having IR (channel change) failures via SageTV, then I just reboot the computer.

When mine would lock up (hasn't under normal use since I covered the IR receiver) all I had to do was power it off/on via the button on the front and it would be fine.

as stanger89 stated or if that doesn't work then unplugg the power and plug back in.

Thanks for the suggestions. They are all simpler than what I was doing.

I am still curious about the two instances of the SageTVService. One of the replies mentioned that this is normal under V7. I'd read that, but I'm still running V6 (although I am avidly awaiting the official release of V7).

So I don't know why there should ever be two instances of the service. Particularly with one of them being "unkillable" .

FWIW, the other oddity that my family noticed around the same time that this problem appeared was that they were unable to view anything over the HD200s we have installed around the house. The HD200s could connect to the server, but they stalled in the "busy circle" when trying to bring up a recorded show.

i find unplugging the power in back works best...........front button only some of the time.......i don't get lockups but repetitive bouncing on/off of red recording light (happened a couple of nights ago for first time in many months......also power cycled cable stb)

The HDPVR lockups hasn't happened that often, but enough that I started using a simple power timer to turn it off and right back on in the middle of the night. I don't have any shows that records in the middle of the night, so it's a workable solution for now.

I power cycle the TV box too. Found out at least once, it was causing the problem, not the HDPVR. Power it off, then back on, while the HDPVR is off.
