Calling all network masters.... help please
Hello,
I am hopeing that some one with some more network sxp than I have can help me out, or at least point me in the right direction. I have just bought a second MVP (got it cheap on ebay). When I connect it to my network every thing appears to work. Then after about 5 min. the second(new) MVP will freeze up. I have read on the forums that I am Having IP addressing problems and need to assign static address for the MVP. I am do not understand how to do this and would really like some help if someone has as sec. My physical computer set up is probably why I am having so much trouble, but I cannot really change too much right now. Computer (C) Wireless router (WR) Switch (S) (C)-----(WR)----------(S)------(C sageTV server) (C)-----/ . . . . . . . . . . . . \------(MVP1) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . \-----(MVP2) That is currently how everything is connected. The sageTV server is connected to a switch in the basement along with the 2 MVP's Where do I try to fix the IP address? In the sageTV server computer, or in the wireless router? I know it is a big mess, but untill I added the second MVP everything worked great. Thank you for looking and for any help you can send my way. Last edited by diodeut; 06-30-2010 at 08:25 PM. |

Really need a little bit more info to help you.
Does your router act as a DHCP server and hand out IP addresses on your network? If so you need to assign an IP to the new MVP that is outside the range that the router hands out, but is on the same subnet. The easiest way to tell is to log into your router and look at the config settings. Most consumer grade routers these days have a web interface where you can point your browser to http://192.168.x.y where the 192.168.x.y is the IP address of your router. If you don't know the IP address of your router and you are running Windows you can open a command prompt and type Code:
ipconfig If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you may be in a little over your head; but everyone has to learn once right ![]() |

Ok, but do I login to the router and setup a static IP for the new MVP based on it's IP?
And yes my router is set up to do DHCP. What is really confusing me if the fact that I have the server, mvp1 and mvp2 connected to a switch and the switch connected to the router. Does the switch matter or do I just need to make the changes to the router because everything is on the same network? This is the ipconfig from the server computer connected to the switch. Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : hsd1.mi.comcast.net. IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.106 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 |

The switch does not matter. It is doing nothing but handling the network traffic in and out of its ports. Consumer-grade switches are "dumb" devices in that they have no configurations. All network IP addresses are handled by the router. So any changes you need to make to your network, needs to go thru the router configuration.

So if I understand correctly.
I need to use the mac address that are on the MVP's in the router to assign them a unique static IP address. Thank you for the help. |

If not, or if the MVP is having problems with DHCP, you should be able to set the IP address directly in the MVP's interface. You would just need to set it to 192.168.1.xxx and make sure the xxx is outside the range that the router is handing out in DHCP. The subnet mask and default gateway settings should be the same as on your computer as those are network wide settings. As far as how to set up the network in an MVP, I can't help you there because I've only seen pictures ![]() |

OK
I think that I am going to try setting the IP in the MVP's first. My router does not support static DHCP. But I have seen a firmware change that would allow it. Thank you again, I have plenty to try tonight when I get Home..... |
