SageTV Core is initializing ...

Hello,

I upgraded to SageTV beta version 7 on May 22nd and my startup times have been alright until today.

I leave SageTV running for 60 minutes and it's stuck at "SageTV Core is initializing..."

I've rebooted the system twice since installing the beta and restarted SageTV a few more times and the time to a usable SageTV (Program Mode) is usually just a few minutes since upgrading.

I'm getting lots of this in the logs :

Code:

it would be nice if it would do this scan of 6,000 recordings in the background ... after I can starting watching TV ...

Do I wait a few hours for SageTV to be usable or reinstall or?

and I hate reinstalling the USB-UIRT and the STB's ...

I hate loosing all the channels ... and then having to find them again ... Shaw Cable won't tell you what channels you should be getting ... they just charge you for them ;-)

Thanks for your time,
Bobby

Try this... Shutdown SageTV, open sage.properties, find the line that has limited_carny_init, and set it to true:

limited_carny_init=true

This will allow SageTV to start up faster, while performing all of these tasks in the background. If you use Intelligent Recording, SageTV may not be able to do any intelligent recordings until all of the background processing is completed.

However, it does appear you may have a problem with Phoenix Fanart or BMT that may be the root cause of your problem. Possibly try uninstalling them and and reinstalling them from the plugin manager and also try the tool Stuckless released to check for duplicate .jar files.

Thanks ... still looking ...

I had the limited carny init set in SageTV 6 ... but I guess it cleared under the 7 beta ...

40 minutes and still stuck ... with limited_carny_init=true set

ran the BMT Library Upgrade Tool for SageTV 7 by stuckless yesterday and restarted more than once since with no problem before 5 am this morning.
Tried it again now after all the restoring and deleting of files ... and it still says nothing to remove.

Phoenix Fan Art and BMT are installed through the SageTV plugins page ... but how do I remove them if SageTV won't start?

ie No plugin manager accessable

Odd. If you can stop SageTV/SageTV Service and edit the sage.properties file, you can disable any of the plugins that way to see if that helps. Just look for the lines like: sagetv_core_plugins/plugin_name/enabled and set it to false to disable the plugin. So for BMT find: sagetv_core_plugins/bmt/enabled and set it to false and then try restarting SageTV. That should tell you if something is messed up with the BMT plugin installation. If the problem goes away, then you should be able to uninstall and reinstall the plugin from the plugin manager. If that doesn't fix the startup problem, try zipping up and posting a complete SageTV debug log that includes all of the startup stuff from the beginning of the log...if there are missing or duplicate .jar files still floating around in your jars directory, we'll be able to tell by looking at the SageTV startup stuff at the beginning of the log file. You may have to restart SageTV, let it try to start for a minute or two, then stop SageTV, and then zip up the log file. The log files get broken off after 9MB or 10MB so if you let it run too long before grabbing the log, the log file with the most recent timestamp may not include the SageTV startup stuff.

Also, possibly Stuckless would be able to tell you if that Class Not Found exception with the MetadataUpdaterPlugin is related to his BMT jars or not and whether or not it is a harmless error or possibly a cause of your startup problem. It might be worth a shot to post this in the BMT thread or PM Stuckless to see if he has any insight.

Thanks ... sounds easiest to disable the plugins that way ...

I'll start looking for all the plugin enabled settings in Sage.properties and disable them ...

I'll copy each setting I disable here ...
Code:
bmt/plugin/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/bmt/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/bmtweb/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/commons-codec/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/commons-dbutils/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/commons-io/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/commons-lang/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/commons-net/enabled=disabled
sagetv_core_plugins/htmlparser/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/jetty/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/log4j/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/lucene-core/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/mobileweb/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/phoenix-api/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/sageutls/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/sagex-api/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/sagex-h2/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/sagexmlinfo/enabled=false
sagetv_core_plugins/web/enabled=false
and with all those disabled SageTV still will not finish startup ...

it's still starting that plugin Sat 5/29 13:02:46.386 [main@1fcf0ce]

Here's my sage.properties and my latest debug log ...

if anything it seems to be going through much faster ... still hung ... generating properties files and *.jpg's for every media file ...

The only 2 things I see odd in the sage.properties is the advanced_video_file_recovery option is set to true and the definition for the metadata parser plugin. Unless there is a specific reason for having it enabled, the advanced_video_file_recovery should be false. And in sage.properties, try changing this line:

mediafile_metadata_parser_plugins=\ org.jdna.sage.MetadataUpdaterPlugin;org.jdna.sage.MetadataUpdaterPlugin

to:

mediafile_metadata_parser_plugins=org.jdna.sage.MetadataUpdaterPlugin

If you have recordings that have been bumped to your imported video list and you're trying to get them back into the recordings using the advanced_video_file_recovery option, you will probably be stuck waiting until SageTV can complete its scan. If you aren't trying to recover recordings, then set that option to false and your startup should return to normal.

Since disabling those plugins\dependencies wasn't the solution, while you have the properties file open, don't forget to re-enable all of the plugins\dependencies you disabled so they are all working again when SageTV restarts.

Same issue - been trying for hours!

Same problem here - installing 7 over 6 is fine however a clean Win7 build and install of 7 sees the SageTV service unable to start and reporting the same errors as the OP.

Repeated reboots and reinstalls from scratch make no difference! Again, this is a clean install without migrated properties or wiz files. No fanart or sizeable import folders.

Any help appreciated else it's back to 6 !

SageTV is starting quickly now ...

Hello,
I slept ...

It appears it was just going extremely slowly through the files listing on startup and had to do all 6,000 recordings and other video files ... it just wouldn't do anything else until it finished.

Now restarting SageTV just takes a few minutes and there are only a few media files scanned in the logs ...

this install is from Jul 10th, 2008 on XP MCE 2005 with all the upgrades and experimentation that comes with the SageTV community and my need to keep upgrading and playing until it breaks. (and Microsoft making a SP3 that broke MCE is even more fun)

after all the fun I had this weekend I bit the bullet and I'll be upgrading my HTPC to a faster lower power SageTV on Windows 7 64 bit soon)

Code:
New:
Norco RPC-470 Rackmount Server case
Silverstone Strider Essential ST50F-ES 500W Power Supply
Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 HDMI motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 905E 65W
OCZ OCZ3G1333LV4GK 4GB 2 X 2GB DDR3-1333 memory

ReUsing:
30GB Kingston SSD Now "hard disk"
2 x PVR-500 MCE tuners
2 x HVR-2250 tuners
1 x 250GB Seagate Hard disk
2 x 250GB Western Digital Hard Disks
Too many lost settings and too much carp in there left over ... I'm thinking clean install in a few weeks.

anyone know of any good way / software for monitoring files in a directory to keep track of changes along the way? so I can easily say this was there on the initial install day ... and say this has changed since then ... and make a new set point after every upgrade? I guess sort of an SVN for SageTV installs or md5 or ?

robogeek thanks for all the help ... we got it running and usable again.

I cleaned up the mediafile_metadata_parser_plugins setting as suggested (It was good before the upgrade) ...
and set advanced_video_file_recovery to false

I did a few restarts of SageTV and disabled everything in the plugins section ... now as I re-enable them ... I'll write the names down as I add them ... and keep track of when I restart SageTV ... so if that happens again in the future ... I have a better starting point to find the conflicts better ...

Thanks for your time and help,
Bobby

ps - Dingdul ... do you have a Sagetv_0.txt file or sage.properties files you can post?

do you have "debug_logging=true" set in your sage.properties file?
