SageTV Service is initializing...

I just installed SageTV 6.0.19 and got it configured. I enabled the SageTV service and now when I try and launch SageTV.exe (GUI), it just sits at the splash screen and never launches.

Is there something I need to do to have the SageTV service running and be able to launch the general GUI?

This is my first real attempt at getting SageTV running.

Thanks!

Check if the SageTV service is stuck in "Starting" mode. v6 does a database upgrade when it first runs, but won't tell you if you start the service. May take 20+ minutes depending on CPU speed and database size.

If you have debug_logging running, you can look into your sagetv_0.txt and see if it is still scanning your files, sage recordings, imported videos, pictures, and music files. If you have a lot of stuff it could take hours (mine took about 15 minutes, but I did read about other users taking hours). Once it finishes scanning all your files, then it should finish starting up.

Also, open up your task manager and see if there is Sage activity. IIRC, it will mainly be sageTVtranscoder.exe doing the parsing.

Is your firewall configured to allow sagetv.exe and SageTVService.exe through? The this FAQ for firewall info.

From what I understand, Java 1.4 & higher should have what is needed, unless there is some sort of restricted version of Java you are using.

Are you sure that is the version of Java that SageTV is using? It would be listed near the top of all the info on the System Information screen. You may want to try reinstalling Java.

Other than that, I would have to ask someone else for more ideas. In that case, it might help for you to provide full copies of sagetv_0.txt and sagetvclient_0.txt from a fresh restart.

Hi Andy,

After a fresh reboot and having SageTV start upon a reboot here is the sagetv_0.txt file. There was no client log file...

When disabling the SageTVService and launching SageTV, it starts fine. I'm having issues with the EXETunerplugin changing my channels on my DirecTV Hughes HTL-HD receiver, but I'll start a new thread to gain support and help for that.

Thanks!

You can enable the client's log file by editing SageClient.properties the same way you did Sage.properties.

In the SageClient.properties file I have this:

#Sage Preferences
#Mon Apr 02 19:46:56 PDT 2007
debug_logging=TRUE
zzz=true

Still no log file is generated.

Have you tried uninstalling & reinstalling Java yet? If not, it was suggested to me that you try:
  1. remove all versions of Java that are installed
  2. remove SageTV
  3. run the SageTV installer and let it install Java
You may want to see this FAQ about doing a complete reinstallation of SageTV. I think you are going to want to keep your wiz.bin, but not your current properties files.

I will proceed with removing Java and SageTV.

My issue is that I setup 15 Favorite recordings last night and I'd like to avoid configuring all of them again. Will backing up the wiz.bin file and restoring back to the new installation of SageTV bring back these types of settings?

Yes, that's why I suggested you keep that file. (All your recording details, EPG data, Favs, etc. are in that database.)

I just wanted to be sure

I'll make sure I don't copy back the Sage.properties files when I get things reloaded.

Having MediaPortal installed along with SageTV (I've disabled almost all the TV aspects that MediaPortal was controlling) doesn't have any adverse effects does it?

I restored an orignial Acronis image for my HTPC, installed Sage 6.1.8 and copied over my wiz.bin file to the new installation. All good now!
