How do you organize your folders?

I have a lot of box sets sprinkled in but am still working on my naming system. The idea is that each folder inside of the movie type (dvd, hdvd, bluray) represents one physical collection of discs. So all the discs in one dvd case are together in a folder or all the discs in a boxset are together.

Mine looks like:

Movies
\Videos\(Movie Type)\(Name of Movie) [Edition]
Example:
\Videos\DVD\Blues Brothers [Collector's Edition]
\Videos\HDDVD\Poseidon

I may move these down one folder so it would be:
\Videos\DVD\Blues Brothers\Blues Brothers [Collector's Edition]

But I do not really have two editions of the same movie in my collection so it owuld be kind of pointless from my standpoint but it would make sense from a design standpoint.

Box Sets/Multidisc Sets
\Videos\(Movie Type)\(Box Set Name)\(Season or disc names)

Examples:
\Videos\DVD\Stargate SG-1\Season 1\Stargate SG-1 S01D01

\Videos\DVD\Rambo - Ultimate Edition\First Blood
\Videos\DVD\Rambo - Ultimate Edition\Rambo - First Blood Part II
\Videos\DVD\Rambo - Ultimate Edition\Rambo III

I'm still not sure if I want to keep the edition name in the folder title or not.

I also have run into some oddities that I havent decided on yet, like Andromeda. Each thinpak contains two discs, where each thinpak is called a collection. I am currently naming it like this:
\Videos\DVD\Andromeda - Slipstream Collection\Season 1\Collection 1\Andromeda S01D01

I could just remove the collection concept and number all the discs for a season sequentially but then it wouldnt match the numbers indicated on the discs, which is neither here nor there I suppose.

Mine is simpler that yours. All my movies (except TV related movies (like B5 movies or Stargate SG-1 direct to DVD movies), but unlike the first Stargate movie) are just by a directory by the first letter of the title (Directory names are 0, A, B etc). Example:

The Last Starfighter is "E:\DVD1\L\Last Starfighter, The.mkv".

Then TV shows as a whole have a directory, and each TV show (with direct to DVD movies) has it's own directory under it. Example:

"E:\DVD_TV3\TV_SHOWS\Stargate SG-1\Stargate SG-1 - S11E01 - The Ark of Truth.mkv"

When I import them, I import "E:\DVD1" and ""E:\DVD_TV3" then sort by folder. That way I can find my movies by starting letter, and my TV shows just have a folder all to them self called "TV_SHOWS" with each series in it's own folder under that, and it shows up under the "T" DVD directory. I've thought of chancing the name to move it to start or finish, but it's not worth it.

While I certainly don't have near as much as most. I've found I much prefer to break TV based DVDs down to individual episodes, and import them into the Sage Recordings database. The malore menus are so much nicer for browsing tv shows than the video library. Back whne i had a decent sized movie library ripped, I preferred to just leave them all flat, and use SMW for browsing them.

Curious as to why you liked them broken down by episode? I guess I've never sat down and wanted to watch a particular episode, I generally will get in the mood to rewatch something and will start at the beginning and just make my way throrugh a season.

I also like to break series disk into episodes, not sure why but it is too late to change now.

I rip complete dvds to a video_ts folder structure so that's probably why I do it per disc. That way I have all the extras and such all together.

Plus My Movies supports them as discs not in a per episode format, at least not yet.

Hmmm…

I’ve got Movie DVDs, TV Epsiodes DVDs, Movie BRs and TV Episode BRs. Then just have AnyDVD/clownBD dump its output to the correct folder.

That said, I usually only have one or two seasons and maybe seven or eight movies on the server at a time.

I have over 100 and have noticed a bit of inconsistency on Sage processing new adds. I create folders Kids, Movies, Music, Educational, etc and have noticed when I do a directory view sometimes Sage shows the directory structure and sometimes it shows it puts most in the root directory and some in the sub-folder.

I haven't been able to figure out the rhyme or reason on what it does it this way. I was thinking it was because of an incomplete directory scan??

Thanks Fuzzy for the idea of ripping out the episodes individually. I have been search for an idea of how to do that instead of being stuck in the DVD menus!

Same here. I like that the community is large enough that people have solutions for both sides of an issue and are willing to help you even if your ideas aren't the same as what they are doing. Way better than the usual "shutup and do it my way" or "you're stupid for doing it that way and here's why" mentality that you see in other communities.

The soon to be Mrs likes dvd menus and I rarely ever just look for a single episode of a series, we tend to watch them in blocks so having them together on a menu works for our viewing style.

Almost everything on my server is encoded with x264/avisynth into mkv's with AC3 audio. I've never liked going through DVD menus anyways, and I can get very near transparent encodes at about 1/4 to 1/3 the space as a DVD. And really good quality 720p encodes at 4000 to 5500 kbps.

For Movies its really simple: [Drive Letter]:/Movies/Movie Title, The.mkv

Yes, anytime the word "The" is in the title it goes in the end.

For TV: [Drive Letter]:/TV/Show Title/Season #/1.01 Episode Title.mkv
The first number being the season number the second being the episode number.
Any special features I decide to keep get the format [season #].x, ie 1.x Special Feature.mkv

I keep 3 more specialized folders: "BD", "DVD", and "Encoded". The first two should be obvious, the third is just a catch all before I organize encoded files.

Be sure and import the folder or drive just above the TV or Movie folder name to keep the directory structure intact. Even though I have 100's of titles SageMC made navigation easy with the "letter select" system it has. Sage v7 makes things more difficult, however I'm sure our excellent mod community is working on a new GUI.
