Organize archived shows

HI everyone,

I'm still in my learning curve with SageTV but I'm getting there. I've got a bunch of TV shows sitting in my Archived Library right now. A bunch of them are similar in nature. For example:

- About 8 shows from OLN titled "Lances Historic Ride", basically an overview of the 2004 Tour de France.

- About 6 "Rick Steves Europe" shows from PBS.

Is there a way I can create two folders in the Archived Library, say one called Lance and the other called RickSteves, and put all those shows listed above in their respective folder? I'm trying to find a way to organize all my archived Favorites, but I can't seem to figure it out.

I also tried loading Cayar's latest STV (rev 15) which has all sorts of neat stuff in it but I can't find anything in there to do what I want either. Is it even possible to organize the archived stuff? If not, that means that everything sits at one level? Sounds like it could get real messy if that's the case.

Thanks for any help.

-Gary

YOU CAN have multiple libraries/folders on your disk(s) to hold the shows/movies in their respective folders. However, the Import Library is pretty much linear in nature gprichardson1 and will show you all these folders in one long line of shows.

This is probably something I'm going to work on improving in the STV in the release after next. If you have any ideas, pop on over to the Cayars thread and make your suggestions known.

The Archived SageTV Recordings list shows them all as one long list; it does not support any sort of categorization in the default STV. (This is the one beign asked about, I beleive.)

The imported Video Library automatically uses folder views, by using the directory tree where the imported videos are located. This is discussed starting on p. 81 of the v2.1 manual.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the info. I hadn't given Imported Video Library much thought because, well, I wasn't sure what it was for. :-) I just read a little bit of the 2.1 manual. After reading that I'm wondering, can I do the following:

- My archived shows are in F:\Videos
- I create another dir called F:\ImportedVideos
- Under that I create two more dirs, say, called LanceArmstrong and RickSteves
- (outside of Sage) move the shows from F:\Videos to F:\ImportedVideos, with the OLN Tour de France ones going to the LanceArmstrong dir and the PBS travel shows going into RickSteves dir.
- In Sage I import the F:\ImportedVideos dir.

My question is, if I do this, will the Imported Video Library screen then show me two folders, LanceArmstrong and a RickSteves? If this is true, I can definitely work within this method. I'd also be interested to see if Sage can give me all the detailed info about the program like it can when the file is in the Archived Library.

I'll have to give this all a try tonight!

-Gary

Yes you can move them and they will show up in folders, however you will loose the detailed info.

Right: what stanger89 said. I didn't mean that you should move your recordings to the video lib because it can display folders; I just mentioned that as clarification since I think Cayars just got the names of the 2 things mixed up (or else I missed something).

If the archived area remains separate, I would like to see it display shows with categorization, but I think a better solution (as others have mentioned elsewhere) would be to junk the separate archive concept and display all SageTV recordings in one place, archived or not.

I haven't played with custom STVs lately. Do any of them provide categorization/sorting of "Archived SageTV Recordings"?

I am still amazed that the import directory has received so much work in this area, while the Library recordings are like no library I have been to. It would be like having a library that has books all on one big shelf alpahabetically without a card catalog.

I think there should be two locations for Video based media in SageTV instead of the current three (Imported Videos, Archived SageTV Recordings, and SageTV Recordings):

SageTV Recordings
==============
basically all the Live TV, favorites, manual recordings should be here.

Video Library
==========
Should contain all other Recordings - Recordings I say to move to the library should go here, and all imported videos - basically merge imported videos and archived SageTV Recordings.

I basically like to only keep shows I am going to watch right away(within about a week) in the SageTV Recordings and any recordings that I am going to keep or will not get to for a while into the library. It makes things easier since when I look in the SageTV Recordings it should never be a really big list. In fact I try to keep this under 10 listings ( individual files or categories).

I have multiple hard drives and have many favorite recordings. My default video file is 2x250GB drives in raid-0. This sounded like a lot of space, but does get used up quite fast at times. I then move the favorites to their respective folders on other drives in my system into folders of their name.
IE: Cold Case from f:\video (Default) to G:\ColdCase.
I keep them on hard drive until I get all of a season so I can watch them stright through and\or archive them on dvd-r. I used to use BTV and the one thing I really miss, The ability to record favorites into different directories. I really wish Sage would somehow incorporate this feature or if someone could write it in to a stv. I am not lazy that I can not move them myself, however it would be nice to keep the details of the show at the same time.
