First off - Welcome!

The HD-PVR seems to be overly sensitive to many, many things. Because of this, it can be hard to track down issues like yours and get a reliable set up. That being said, here are a couple of things to start with.....

First, if you haven't already, I would recommend that you read the "How To" located in my signature. It is one installation method that has helped dozens of people get a more reliable HD-PVR setup. Part of those suggestions is to use an older HD-PVR driver - 1.0.5.301. I've found that proper installation is critical to long term HD-PVR reliability.

Second, the HD-PVR is very sensitive to heat. Definitely do not place it on top of (or even right next to) your STB. Most STB are like an oven, and placing the HD-PVR near it will cause lock-ups just as you are describing. You really need to place the HD-PVR where it is well ventilated. Some even remove the gray top cover to aid in the air flow.

Third, the HD-PVR seems to be very sensitive to USB traffic. It is best to plug the HD-PVR into a USB header that isn't shared with other devices. Some people have even gone as far as buying a USB PCI add on card and plugging the HD-PVR into it.

There are lots of similar threads out there, and a quick search on "HD-PVR" will bring up a bunch of them.

Good luck. Let us know if you have other questions.

I did most of the things listed mentioned, using the 1.0.5.301 driver, removing the gray cover, using a separate PCI USB card where the HD-PVR is the only device using the card, not using the HD-PVR IR, covering up the HD-PVR IR window, and using a USB-UIRT for IR channel control.

I had one failure in a month where I missed a recording, but the HD-PVR recovered on its own without any intervention. I used to power cycle the HD-PVR at least once a week.

I might add a fan. I already have the fan, but need to hook it up. I wanted to monitor the HD-PVR for awhile to determine if the above modifications helped the stability, and it did. However, I think I will still add the fan. I have SageAlert running, and I think I will add "Growler" to automatically reset the HD-PVR upon failure.

Does anyone know what was supposed to have been fixed or improved from the older 1.0.5.301 that everyone recommends and the current version? I still have some minor issues but am still using the new drivers. The current level of stability is something I could live with if there are issues with the old driver. I though there were some versions which fixed audio sync issues with FIOS or something like tat. I can't seem to find a list of changes in the drivers. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate it.
