Sun Java update responsible for Sage failing?

I just updated my Java to Version 6, Update 16, and SageTV will no longer start.

Event ID 7031: The SageTV service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

This event just repeats every 1 minute as the service tries to restart. I'm running Windows 7, 64 bit.

Anyone else seen this?

There are other threads like that... Basically, upgrading java while SageTV's service is running is a bad idea...

The way I was able to fix it was by renaming the sagetvservice.exe, rebooting, uninstalling java, reinstalling java, and renaming back sagetvservice.exe...

Renaming the EXE shouldn't be necessary. Just go into the Services console in Windows (under Administrative Tools) and disable the service temporarily. Or boot into Safe mode.

The problem is that it gets stuck in "Starting" mode, so can't be stopped. Trying to do anything with it just ends up crashing the service screen, after a few minutes timeout.

Not sure that it would have made the whole process any faster, but that might have been another way to do it.

This works. Thank you. How sad is this, that we must go through this crap on a security update from Sun.
