Hauppage NTSC no captions (shown or recorded)
Hi there,
I think the 950Q can only use software encoding for analog signal and was wondering if the SageTV encoder is even capturing the CC signal while in analog form? Does SageTV use a software MPEG encoder if the card doesn't have a hardware encoder? Is this a trouble ticket issue? This was posted in the "Sage Hardware" forum, but I didn't see any response. So this is repeated in "SageTV Software". Here goes: --------- Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Hauppage PVR-USB-950Q which SageTV detects and recognizes. I can get ATSC .mpg (MPEG-2) with captions shown and can be seen by CCExtractor .55. I was suprised that you can put captions in .mpg (MPEG-2). I also used VideoReDo and saw the captions in their latest release. When I connect a VCR and setup Channel 3 (analog), I can't see any captions on the screen. The .mpg files I used CCExtractor with nothing shown. Nothing in VideoReDo software either. Somehow maybe SageTV is not picking up the captions while in analog mode. I followed the instructions in Appendix K, the last line was about a registery key. The registry key did not exist in HKLM (Local Machine), I only have a "SageTv" key in HKCU (Current User). I only have two DVD encoder, Cyberlink Power DVD 8 and SageTV. I selected Cyberlink, nothing is shown on the screen or .mpg files. I also selected the "DVD-Best" and "DVD-Good" quality encoder, but nothing. Windows Media Center and WINTV7 (Haupppage) sees the captions in ATSC and NTSC. SageTV sees ATSC captions, but not NTSC. ----------------- Robert |

For ATSC, there's no encoding on your tuner so the original data stream is retained which includes the caption data. For analog, your capture card has to encode the video and audio, and as far as I know, analog capture cards do not support captions.

Hauppage WinTV-HVR-950Q does analog captions
Hi there,
Both Windows Media Center 7 and Hauppage WINTV7 show captions in their analog MPEG-2 data files. Windows Media Center 7 outputs .wtv and can be converted to .dvr-ms which has analog captions. WINTV7 creates .ts with captions, I think they use their own PVR software. I don't think it's the hardware, it's the software (SageTV), don't you think? Robert |
