really slow internet on some protocols
something has happened to the laptop since I shut it down last friday. it seems that anything using http or smtp will load a few KB or maybe a full page then it just sits there looking dumb "waiting on..."
I'm having to remote to one of my other systems to post this plea for help. oddly enough, port 22 traffic seems to be completely unhindered. I was able to stream a full movie from my server at home last night, but couldn't get more than 2-3 pages to load in the browser from the dozen or so bookmarks I tried. Firefox and IE are behaving the same way. Doesn't seem to matter how I connect to the net; aircard, wifi, wired. they all behave the same. my other computer on the same LAN this weekend had no trouble surfing. I also tried turning off the firewall. no dice.

I assume you are running some version of windows on that laptop - anything in the event logs? You can also have a virus or malware affecting the machine.

That's my guess. I've seen this many times where virus and/or malware caused certain functions to stop working (had this issue with my mother-in-law's laptop just this weekend, internet didn't work but email did).

yeah, it turned out to be something like that; mal-ware. I wrote the thing down, but it's on a notepad at work. Have no idea what I did to fix it, but in the process of running scanners and such the problem cleared. Never did see a detection though.
Thanks for the responses.
