SageTV as SageClient

Hi,

my roomate and I both have our own licence of SageTV and PVR 250. We would like to be able to connect to each other's computer sometimes. Can we do that with our current SageTV setup? We don't want to buy SageTV client just fo that. Thanks

Myro

A very similar question was asked a few months ago, but I was unable to find it. The answer was no, currently you have to use the client to access each others server.

If viewing is all you want to do you can just transfer the shows and use the video library to view them.

There is no peer-to-peer mode for SageTV. I would recommend getting one copy of SageTV client and one copy of SageTV Recorder. That way, the second PC would be a complete slave to the first.

FWIW, I wish that SageTV had a peer-to-peer mode. It would solve quite a few issues that I have had with my set top box.

I agree, peer-to-peer mode would allow for a true networking of the client without using the sage recorder. I honestly don't care for the current available way to network the SAGETV system. I think that a better way (which would bring in more $$ for Frey Technologies) would be to have the peer-to-peer mode.

Except which machine would be the 'master' ? The current design of SageTV has a single master, and then possibly a number of slaves that can be either clients or recorders.

I'm actually rather keen on the current design - for me it seems to simplify things. There's no confusion about where the data or controller is.

Andy.

Why not design a multi-master system? I mean, let's be honest here, that's what the ultimate PVR system would do. Then, no matter which one was taken down, you would still be in business.

Sure this concept has been used in the past, but hey, if it works, use it. (Think ActiveDirectory)

A good point indeed. The question is though - is it really necessary? Maybe a better solution would be to allow you to point SageTV's client GUI to a 'remote server', in the same was as SageClient works.

I think it is necessary, especially when you have two machines with multiple tuner cards. As it currently stands, you need to have one instance of SageTV Recorder running for each remote tuner and you must hand edit the sage.properties file to add each tuner.

If each peer was a potential master then determining mastership wouldn't be very difficult (where I work, we deal with multiple potential masters all the time). It would also allow each peer to record their own programs to their local hard drives, and then share the information among themselves.

EDIT: Changed the word 'copy' to 'instance' when talking about SageTV Recorder.

I agree, I think it's completely necessary, and would once again push SAGETV up above the other products that are out there. Me wonders if Narflex is watching this thread..

I agree. I had inquired about this a when I first got SageTV. The client/recorder setup works, but really it would be nicer to have a peer-to-peer capability with SageTV.
