Sage logic on favs flawed.

I had a favorite that was scheduled to record from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. I decided to record an NBA game from 5:00 to 7:30 instead so I set it as a manual record. At 7:30 it changes the channels and records the last half hour of the favorite... this makes absolutely no sense.

I was watching the NBA game as it was recording and it went past 7:30 but sage decided to change the channel and record the last half hour of the favorite. Isn't Sage smart enough to know the favorite is almost over and not try and record it?

If that was the only airing of the favourite then it would record whatever it could of it, even if that means just the last half hour of it. If Sage could find an alternate, future airing then it should have waited to record the entire future airing (or at least that's the behaviour I see in this situation).

Nothing like going away for a few days come back to watch a show and only have the last half hour... If a show is a conflict I prefer that it not record any part of it.

You were watching the game live? it should have popped up asking you if you wanted to let it switch channels to record the fav.

Better to record and give you the option of not watching it than to not record and leave you with no options at all.

I prefer that it does not record part of it. Shows are repeated constantly these days. If SageTv records part of the favorite only.. and the show is not watched right away...It will not record a full re-aring that airs says 15 days from the partial recording.. unless you delete the show and say it's the wrong recording.

PS Also I rather it not record a partial because I will get a message "recording missed due to conflict"... That way I can choose to watch the episode online etc...

No it wouldn't because I made the game a manual recording while watching it. That means that it took priority over all recordings.

Also i have seen this happen where there is only 1 tuner left and a favorite starts say 12:30 through 1:30 am and another starts at 1:00am through 2:00 am. It will record the 2nd fav from 1:30 am through 2:am.

So it seems like the best solution is for Sage to go ahead and record the partial airing (assuming the tuner would otherwise be idle), but (a) generate a system message to the effect that part of the recording was missed due to conflict, and (b) don't let the existence of a partial recording stop it from trying again for a full recording of a later airing.

In other words, the flaw is not that Sage makes the partial recording, but that having made it, it considers its job done with respect to that episode.

Yes.

Using SJQ I was able to setup a job to look for others like these it found some see xml. As you can see file was not broken up in segments. The recording was scheduled for 2:00 instead it recorded half of it at 2:30. It recorded medium from 1:30 to 2:30. I am trying to capture full episodes of re-runs... but this is not helping. I prefer it conflicting and not recording at all so it can pick up the next re-run. Missing half a show is not like missing the first 5 minutes sage should be able to handle this better.

I am sure there are other users that think they have all full shows...but will be surprised to be missing parts of the beginning. The only way I happened to see it happening was because i was watching sage at the time.
Bug report being filed.

Your thinking was correct.... but it is a bad way to handle it.

Response from Sage below

When a Favorite is not being aired again at all in the next 14 days; then it
will do this to record at least some of it since it can't record the entire
thing. The theory is that recording something is better than nothing since
it doesn't think it'll get another chance at recording it later.

....................................................................................
There should be some kind of message that only part of the show recorded.

I was able to recreate it quite easily buy scheduling a movie category favorite and some other favorites on my test machine. It said that some movies where not recorded due to conflict.... yet it showed up as a complete recording in Sage even though some where missing a full hour.
