XP to W7 (client only) Process?

I have a WHS box running SageTV as a service and have a client PC running SageTV under XP. Most of the info I've found for upgrading the OS revolves around moving to a completely different PC or upgrading a combination SageTV server and client PC. The only thing I'm changing is the OS on the client PC running Sage. All import folders will remain the same.

Is this FAQ entry what I need to follow in order to upgrade my client PC from XP to Windows 7? Based on this entry, it seems to indicate that I must move the recordings directory to a new folder, which really doesn't make sense in this situation. I'm thinking that I can re-use the old directory and everything will be fine, but I can't find anything to confirm that. Can I just skip that step in this FAQ entry and follow all the other steps? Do I actually need to use the "advanced_video_file_recovery=true" property?

To move just the client, you don't need to do any of that, that's for moving the server.

Just make sure you have the client license handy.

Install 7. (Complete reinstall is best, which is why I have no or little personal data on my system drive)

Download the latest version of the client to the 7 machine.

Install. Enter license.

Point to server (you might have to reboot the server at that point, as it might think you are trying to run 2 machines with 1 client license)

Done. You'll loose a few settings, but that's easy to fix, as you only loose the CLIENT settings, not the SERVER settings. 99% of the settings are for the server, and stay there with the server. (BTW, if you have client setting you just CAN'T loose, then you'll have to track down all the settings files, keep a copy, and then take down the "new" place 7 stores them, and then just over write what's there)

BTW, I've moved/installed my client about 5 times, and it is truly that easy.

Now getting all your codecs working under 7 .....

Cool! Even better than I had hoped. With WHS, I have incremental backups of all my settings, so copying things back over is pretty simple.

Oh no... you mean codecs aren't really easy to do in W7? I thought everything was easier in W7?!?! LOL!

I'm looking into doing the exact same thing (only upgrading client). Good to know it shouldn't be too difficult. One question though: how about 64 bit? How does the sage client behave in 64bit? is it worth it or should i stick with 32bit?

Damn good question which has crossed my mind as well. I have two license at home, one home, one pro, and already decided on 64 bit for the home computer, but I haven't settled on 32 or 64 for the client PC. I have heard of several people running 64 bit without issue, although I don't know their exact setup.

Anyone else have an opinion?

Am running Win7 Pro64 on my client laptop, which I also use with Placeshifter at work. I just installed Sage into a root directory folder, and have not had any issues.

I even blew out all my stuff, setup the Client & Server version so I could wrap my head around the BMT/Fanart stuff, setup a null tuner etc., then when I figured I could deploy, wiped all that out, and reinstalled the client.

Pretty painless,

Grant

Seems like the UAC/Virtual Store of Vista & Win7 causes the majority of problems. Install on root ie: C:\Sage, and eliminate the potential of that one.

I'm running the x64 too. It's OK. Sometimes drivers or Codecs are a little slower coming, but isn't nearly as bad as the old x64 XP days.
