Smile How to Record in HD?

I am just getting into the HD arena and it's like starting all over - amazing.

All of my current recordings are SD. I just bought a SageTV Theater for our HD TV, so now I need to record in HD.

I have Time Warner STD HD box. My two tunners in our PVR server we use to record are SD (WinTV PVR).

I have a WinTV HVR-1600 but have never used it. Can I use the HVR-1600 to record QAM channels ( clear HD channels ) and get HD recordings?

I am also looking at the WinTV HD-PVR for recording in HD. If I use this box, will my commercial skip program still work? I am using Dragon Global Showanalyer.

Thanks,
Joe

Yes, but probably not everything you get with your STB.

Comskip donator's version and the newest 1.0 of SA support H.264.

Note that the "Media Player" (ie standalone, no SageTV server) configuration of the HD200 can't manage tuners, you need ot use it in Extender config for that.

Thanks Stanger89!

A few more questions please

I have a SageTV server for recordings. My HD200 connects to it as a media extender, so I see the same SageTV interface as I did with my old MVP. So I think I am good to go from that side of the fence, correct? I have SageTV 6.6 on my server.

Now, as for recording in HD. With the HVR-1600, do I connect my TimeWarner cable feed to the "ATSC" input? Is the other input "TV" not used? How are the recordings saved? Is it in H.264 format? If so, I take it I wont have to compress from MPEG2 to MPEG4 anymore?

As for SA (ShowAnalyzer), the web shows 0.9.7 latest version. Is there a 1.0 version out there?

Use the ATSC to get the HD channels. You will most likely only get local channels. The recordings are saved as mpeg2.

You can get SA 1.0 in the dragon global forums. It just recently came out of beta and the author recommends sticking with 0.9.7 for now if you don't need H.264 as it is more stable.
