Windows Shares with Imported Media

I have setup a test linux server and am attempting to access music, photos and videos that are on a Windows share. I found that using the Sage UI to navigate to "Network" and then selecting the smb share does not work.

I can access the share if I smbmount it first.

Is this normal and is there a way to access the Windows share without mounting it? I only access the shares once in a while so I do not want to keep them mounted.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom, when you are connecting to a windows share from linux (which is probably something most linux users are not doing), are there any error messages in the sagetv_0.txt log file? Sage uses jcifs (i think) so it should be able to browse the samba shares, but I'm wondering if there is some error int he sagetv_0.txt that might shed some light on it.

also, becuase they are using jcifs, then I don't think that specifying the path as \\sharename\folder will work, i think you will need to use a uri format like, smb://sharename/folder.

I'm doing it with an smbmount. I mount the server (from /etc/fstab) as /mnt/myserver, and have a subdirectory in each of /var/media/{videos, music, pictures} that's a symbolic link to the appropriate subdirectory of /mnt/myserver.

Maybe there's a better way, but it works.

Thanks Sean and loonsailor. I'll look in the log to see if anything is in there. I'll try manually specifying the uri to see if that works.

I don't really mind using smbmount since this is only a test system, I just wanted to see if I was doing something fundamentally wrong. It's been a long time since I used unix

You could also try updating jcifs.

http://jcifs.samba.org/src/

SageTV seems to be using an old version.
