Newbie. Very excited to build my HT system with Sage. Using the free download for STV 6.6.
I'm running Win 2003 x64 Edition SP2. When I install the latest java 1.6u16 I get an error on STV startup that it cannot locate java - please install java 1.4. When I install java 1.4u19 it finds it without a problem. jre 1.6u16 installs to C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6 (custom install - otherwise installs to C:\Program Files\Java\jre6 with same error result). jre 1.4u19 installs to C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\1.4.2_19 So my question is, how does STV 'sniff' for the java installation? Is there a config file parameter? registry entry? environment variable? or is the 'sniffer' hardcoded to check in one location? Much thanks for humoring me. ![]() BTW, all versions of Sun JRE can be attained from: http://java.sun.com/products/archive |

On a 32 bit OS all installs go to C:\Program Files. Quit doing a custom install and only install the 32bit version of java. That's all Sage needs. If you're running Server 2003 64 bit you'll have more issues when you get to installing the drivers for tuners. Gerry

Yikes, I wouldn't recommend that OS! Especially if it's for playback.

OK... :-S Not a problem. No doubt the funky "Program Files (x86)" is (unnecessarily) in play here. I was hoping it would be as easy as a config file parameter.
I can get any of the MSOS through my MSDN license. Are there any threads on here that discuss which is better/why? Or what are your thoughts? My intent is to strictly have this as a headless STV server and get a few HD200s around the house. Right now I am testing the Win 2003 server on STVclient on my WinXP Pro SP2. |

WHS is perfect for a headless system. It has better support for XP drivers if you run in to trouble finding drivers.

I run WHS (WIndows Home Server) That is based on WIndows 2003 server 32 bit. For the Sage Tv server you would be better off sticking to 32 bit. Most users run XP or Vista with alot beggining to upgrade\use Windows 7. I like WHS for its added features. XP drivers will work fine with it. For a Sage client Windows 7 will probably work best from a video visual standpoint.

I'm also running WHS. I don't see any version of Java installed on the system. Is that normal?

that is weird. Go to start > settings > control panel
you should see a java icon in there. I rolled back to JRE 1.6.0 and my problems went away. Also noticed that JRE 1.6.0_16 was giving me overlapping text from multiple screens after navigating through STV. Not sure if this was b/c I'm remote connected into the server, or the JRE version. |

On WHS there is no such thing as settings off the start menu. It goes directly to Control Panel and there's nothing for Java in there. I really think this is specific to WHS. I've been running Sage for several years and always had Java until I moved to WHS for the Operating System.

You have java on WHS. It is installed in the jre directory under the SageTV directory. WHS installs a little differently. It installs the runtime version and only the necessary files needed. A full blown install actually would put more files in the normal java directory under Program Files. And if you ever decide to update it will be to the full blown version just as you have in the past. Download it from Sun java.
